Harriers Final goodbye happenings (updated)

Just had 8 harriers fly high and south of coningsby in formation

Cottesmore at 1330hrs was bright and clear with slight wind from just west of north.

22 threshold view of the runway was light covering of white stuff [and -4C from the car thermometer].

Nothing outside except two vehicles.

My understanding is that COT is not expected to be open before Thursday.

Just spoke to Cottesmore and I've just been told that because of the expected crowds next week, there will be no parking around the Cottesmore locality - including local villages.

The police are apparently going to actively enforce the no parking restrictions put in place for the day.

Cottesmore would prefer that as many people as possible go to other locations to watch the flypast - Waddington. Coningsby and Scampton were mentioned in the conversation, as they have got much more car parking facilities.

If anyone knows a local land owner, perhaps there is a huge opportunity to make a bit of money in car parking fees.

Just what I thought.

I supect alarm bells are ringing at the huge numbers expected and they don't wont the area 'grid-locked' (her words).

The conatct was telling me they've had enquiries from all points in the UK and lots from mainland Europe too.

I suggested charging for on base parking - there wasn't the slightest bit of interest. I know thjer would be logistical problems, but what an opportuinity to make some money for charity.

There's a public footpath that crosses the 22 threshold. They'd have had to publicise its closure in advance, something I'm sure hasn't been done.

Travelled up to cottes this morning only to find it was no fly due to ice.Cant these restrictions be made known to the press? is it not bad enough to lose a base,the aircraft that fly there and it seems any rights for the public to travel and view on this day? chris

We set out for Cotty this morning, but I gave the station a ring en route and saved a wasted journey (well, sort of - diverted to Lakenheath to sit in fog all day instead!).

Regarding the no parking zone, I've just phoned a mate who lives close to the base and he's going to ask his local plod if any such restrictions are planned.

I don't see OUR problem as one of parking, more that once we have parked, sensibly off-road on the verge, one person photographs each vehicle and everyone receives a fine, etc. Call it a charge for parking!

In a democracy, rules are made and imposed, we get to break them and suffer the consequences when caught.
