Thunder, the Varsity used the Wellington wing. It was, if you like, Wellington's grandson, with father being, and seeing a Lincoln on the fire dump as we taxied past on the southern taxiway.
Happy days!

Cracking Shots, WJ916 ended its days on the Lyneham fire dump apart from the bits some folks used to make a sort of space Shuttle for a local town fair from memory.

WJ948 flew to the USA.... Still out there IIRC.

As for the last flyer WL679.... I recall it doing an airfield beat up at Coningsby once in the mid 80s.... Rather a surprise when your sat down the road next to the HAS site!!

I think that most RAF bases got a Varsity for the local fire section to practice on (even Bruggen, Gutersloh & Laarbruch) and especially Catterick & Manston for the fire training schools at both.

Yup, even a few civilian airfields got a few to cremate - Leeds/Yeadon & Bristol/Lulsgate spring to mind!

Did see the RRE Pershore bird on approach into Coningsby 3rd Oct '73.
And two of Finningley's retired birds WF372:T and WJ909:A at the Peterboro Aeroclub at Sibson 25th Apr '76 I think they were lined up for clubhouse/cafe.
Over our school playing field there was always the drone of a Varsity from either CAW Manby, Strubby or I think Cranwell.
Magic days

Would anyone revive the abandoned burnt retired photo thread to accompany so of these treasures?

Alas I have pretty much zilch
