Hopefully not an entirely stupid question...

When two U-2Ss launch using c/s "Black 01 & 02" like today and Wednesday, is it always the case that it is the two with the "Span Pods"?

Thanks for all the progress info. guys, I sometimes get to see them over Bridgnorth after the Shawbury turn.

Alan.

Yes that is the two misson U-2s with the ‘hat like pod on the top ‘ that is how I always answer to folk asking :)
Which is the cdl (Common Data Link ) I think
Yes they always seem to have the same callsign now ,much like the RCs do from MH ie JAKE callsign ,and as do the global Hawks (FORTE)

Another daft question - how long are typical U2 missions to eastern Europe, assuming that's where they're headed? Trying to do the math to work out if said NOTAM will need to be extended (I guess you can see where I coming from on this...)

Usually somewhere in the region of 6-8 hours - so yes I'd expect a new NOTAM to be posted for the return of the U2s later today.

A bit of a late reply, but 'BLACK' is the mission aircraft's callsign, it doesn't always mean that it has the dorsal pod on the top though, I've seen it a few times as BLACK 01 with no pod.
