Mildenhall Train station
Mildenhall Train station
Anybody know where this was? It was the end of the Cambridge to Mildenhall line and closed in 1962. The train station building is still in use as a private residence.. where was/is it? Thanks.
Re: Mildenhall Train station
Mildenhall Railway Station still exists and is now a private residence. Its located on Station Road, just off the A1102 Worlington Road, heading towards Barton Mills.

Re: Mildenhall Train station
Take the B1102 out of Mildenhall towards Worlington immediately after you cross the bridge on a right hand corner Station Road is on your left then Station Drive on your right drive down it and the station is fairly obvious. OS Ref TL707740.

Re: Mildenhall Train station
Just out of interest where is the nearest Station now?
Re: Mildenhall Train station
At a guess Shippea Hill.
Re: Mildenhall Train station
Think Thunder is correct, as Shippea Hill was always used for the shuttle-bus service to the Air Fetes

My Anglian pal uses Kennet to get back to Newmarket on wet days. That's to the south of the Hall.

Re: Mildenhall Train station
Shippea Hill station to RAF Mildenhall is 6.5 miles and Lakenheath Railway station is 7.8.
I think Mildenhall railway station had a turntable in steam days, but nowhere big enough for Tornado,
and also a small loco shed.

Re: Mildenhall Train station
Kennet seems the best option. Lakenheath station has no trains week days and just a few at weekends... Shippea Hill has 1 train a day.. Kennet looks more like a regular service. Shippea Hill is listed as the least used station in England.
Re: Mildenhall Train station
We used to get the train from Yeovil Junction to Shippea Hill on a Saturday about once a month back in the early 80's before any of us had driving licenses. We went for most of the Saudi-Swap E3 rotations, Lakenheath/Mildenhall show etc. We'd then cycle from Shippea Hill down to Mildenhall, spend most of the day there before cycling to Brandon train station via Lakenheath, and home again. We never used Lakenheath station - it's the wrong side of the base, and not all the trains stopped there anyway. From memory it was the 06:36 Yeovil Junction to Waterloo, getting in at about 09:15, then cycle across London to Liverpool street to get a train to Ely, where you changed to get the Ely to Norwich train which stopped at Shippea Hill, Brandon and Thetford. The last return home was something like 20:38 from Waterloo - can't remember the Shippea Hill times.
The signal man at Shippea Hill was a spotter, and used to phone through to Yeovil Junction signal box any serials of C-141/C-5 etc that had landed whilst we were at or on the way to Shippea Hill on the train home. The signal man at Yeovil Jct would then give us the serials when we got there - at about 22:45 - on a good day when nothing had gone wrong!
This was in the days before you had to book your bike on the train and pay. You just pitched up at the guards van opened the door and clambered in. The Shippea Hill to Ely train was usually a DMU, and the guards van had hot air vents which were handy for drying out soaking wet socks when it had been pi55ing with rain all day long.

Re: Mildenhall Train station
Mildenhall station was the end of the line from Cambridge. It did indeed have a turntable and a small goods yard. The main station closed to passengers in 1962 following the 'Beeching Cuts' with the goods yard continuing until 1964. The Mildenhall Museum contains images and exhibits from the station.
This film shows the route as seen today and Mildenhall from 14:49 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jOJJc4QonI
There are four stations locally within 8 miles of here with very extremely limited service, Kennest being the closet, Shippea Hill, Lakenheath and Brandon. At one time Shippea Hill was identified by Network Rail as the most underused station in the network and I don't think that has changed to much!!
For a more guaranteed service and connections, Thetford, Newmarket, Ely and Bury St Edmunds. Shame really we are not connected by rail but maybe in the far, far distant future the proposed Cambridge Light Rail may come this way.
