A friend is planning a trip to Slovakia, taking in some spotting at Sliac . Any ideas what spotting is like there please?

Been a few times, but not for a while.. lots of Migs stored at one end of the field.. probably gone by now. But don't remember any issues seeing things with a bit of driving around the perimeter.. quite open…

He plans to use public transport ! Thank you for the info I think he hopes the Migs will be flying.

I've no idea how friendly (or otherwise) local security are. We were there on the days around an air-show so there were a fair few locals about too. This was probably 8-10 years ago.

The main motorway (66) runs north/south about 1Km to the west of the base.

There is a junction off the motorway which leads to a road that runs right under the approach at the southern end. There is a copse of trees with an old air-raid shelter in it. The fence is quite high, and has been replaced with solid metal sheeting that you can't see through, but if you go back a bit you can see over it. From here you can see into the shelter area where the Mig-29's operate from. This is close to where all the old Mig-21's but last time I was there only half a dozen or so remained. I'd expect them all to have gone by now. There were some bagged Mig-29's stored here too, including the one I needed (the fire damaged one).

There is a north/south road (69) running through the base with the barracks on the east, and the base on the west. There is a Mig-21 preserved in the courtyard of the barracks and this can be seen easily. Views into the airfield side from here are not great - lots of buildings and other obstructions. At the northern end of the base on this road is a (failed?) attempt at a civilian airport terminal.

There is a hill to the north west of the base, close to a radar/communications site. I can't remember how we got there (it involved driving down paved tracks) but it did give elevated views into the area where the L39's operated from, and we could read them off from there.

Not sure I fancy trying to do it by public transport. If base security tell you to p155 off then what?

The former stored Mig21s are long gone apart from the one preserved on the field , Mig 29s in bags I seem to recall near impossible to read and I was driven up to them
Worked in Slovakia for a while and my Logistics manager was a former Mil8 pilot so bad no problem getting into bases with him
Would not entertain doing it alone on foot around the outside far to much like hard work.

Thank you, my friend is already out there and comes home tomorrow. There wasn't much flying . He visited Tuesday and saw 3 Mig 29s and 1 L39 and yesterday only saw 1 Mig 29 & 1 L39.
