Mildenhall 27-8-1979 CP-107 Argus Plus others

Post by PaulN » Thu Aug 13, 2020 1:58 pm

Hi

One for Darren

On the August Bank holiday 41 years ago , we had a regular trip to the bases , more for something to do than expecting to see much :pop: but as was "normal" back then , that you never knew what you would come across  and to prove the point at Mildenhall was 10726 CP-107 Argus

I am pretty sure , but happy to be proved wrong , but I think this was the one and only visit by an Argus :S , the locals at the time said it did a flying display at a close by SSAFA show on the Sunday :S

Thanks for looking

Cheers

Paul :thumb:

They don't come much rarer than that. Certainly never attended Air Fete. Derived from the beautiful Britannia and the Canadians also operated a freighter version.

What about 10728 from the Maritime Proving & Experimental Unit which was present on 2.7.78.

Cheers Mike

If you want a good read to see how different they are , there is an excellent book on the subject " The Canadair Argus CL-28 and and CP-107 " by Baker/Campbell ..fascinating read , then came the CL-44/Yukon , a whole different ball game

Very nice pic. Ooh, I love an Argus! They were regular visitors to Kinloss, and occasionally Lossie, back in the day. Surely a unique engine sound. You could hear them miles away on a still night! Thanks for posting.

Great to see these pix.
The Argus was one of those aircraft that I saw a few of, but never near enough with a camera! Even when I did, I only had a 135mm Telephoto lens.

Earlier that year the first production one 10710 appeared at the Strathallan Air Show. No, it didn't land, although they had managed to get a Comet & Shackleton in, but not out again

And a couple of years earlier, this was the nearest I could get at Kinloss

Ah. Excuse a 77 year old boring old f.rt reminiscing. Best view I ever had of an Argus was as a 16 year old ATC Cadet in the right hand seat of a Vampire T.11. We came across it at 18,000 odd feet near Snpwdonia, and did a slow roll round it. REALLY!!!. The things you could do in the good old days    Lovely pictures. Lovely times.

You can never have too many Arguses, and I managed to catch four of these lovely machines on the ground at Kinloss in September 1978. My 200mm telephoto lens was too long to get them all in so I had to split the view in two pics.

Glad to have bought up so many memories for people

Bet that Vampire trip was fun :S as you say that sort of thing would be frowned upon these day sadly :(

Those 4 Argus...around the 4th September 1978 by any chance :S Same day the NASA NC-130B was at Lossie I have similar pics some where

Cheers

Your date certainly fits in, Paul. I took those pics on the 2nd September. There was also a CC-137 that day. I have the Arguses also noted on the 5th, along with two USN C-1As.

Funnily enough, this afternoon I digitised a couple of slides of the NASA Herk. Not particularly good ones, but better than nothing!

Never seen an Argus but these images are something to drool over - always were when I used to read the aviation magazines in my 'teens.

If anyone does manage to invent a working time machine, make sure you can take modern technology back too - DSLRs, mobile "radar" etc! That would certainly fill some gaps in the logs.

A great post by all.
I was lucky enough to see the Argus on a couple of occasion (Kinloss being one when I was nearly 15) the sound of them engines I will never forget.
All the best

It was one of our silly weekends ...and there were quite a few of those  Flew into EDI on the 1st , there were 2 USCG HH-3F.s on a boat in Rosythe , next day Leuchars show , then up to Lossie/Kinloss to get the CP-107s...nothing else there visiting :( , 2 USMC KC-130F,s came into Lossie that day too , have a landing shot of the NC-130B in the loft some where :S :S with its thimble nose , get your shots up  then flew back in the evening....oh the madness of youth

Glad everyone is enjoying the shots

Cheers

The Argus certainly brings back memories. While serving at Ballykelly N.I. in 1962 the Canadians were regular visitors with the R4D8 and offered supernumerary crew seats for people going on leave. They landed at Manston. I lived in Hastings at the time and applied for a crew seat. The aircraft was changed to an Argus at the last minute and my duty was to sit by a bubble window as lookout. Wonderful experience for a 17 year old. Posted to Aden January 1963 so never got another trip. Thanks for posting.
