Showing on Freedar etc with Mode S (MLAT)
Re: Notam today 18th
I would assume having got it fixed they were sick of waiting for the KC-10 to work and repositioned to Fairford to fully fuel it and depart alone. It may be refuelled once it gets the other side of the pond too.LecLightning56 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 10:06 amPuzzling why it has been dependent on the fate of the KC-10 at Mildenhall for the return journey, unless it is being met by a tanker from the States.

Anything else expected to move today
Re: Notam today 18th
There doesn't seem to be much sign of activity as of1200. All three B2s are outside basking in the sun. My camera isn't great, but I think the two outside the long hangar as you look from the Whelford Road are 1068 New York on the right and 1071 Mississippi on the left, then up by the inflatable/U2(?) Hangar, 0129 Georgia.

Re: Notam today 18th
At the moment, there is a flight of one B 52 with the callsign FUSTY01 from Barksdale to Qatar at the air base El - Udeid, 60-0021
Re: Notam today 18th
I imagine that's it for today, the current NOTAM is up until 1630L, that will allow the B-52 'MYTEE91' , to reach a point of no return in case of another divert.
Of course the NOTAM could yet be extended or another one activated later on.

Re: Notam today 18th
There is a C 17 on the deck from yesterday, maybe departure.
Re: Notam today 18th
Could be, although these RCH fights are normally well documented beforehand.

Can a fully fuelled B-52 not get off the runway at Mildenhall, then? Did wonder why it came to Fairford first..SamP wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 10:30 amI would assume having got it fixed they were sick of waiting for the KC-10 to work and repositioned to Fairford to fully fuel it and depart alone. Re: Notam today 18th
Plenty of runway for a B-52 to take off from Mildenhall fully fueled. I think the original plan was to take off with a light fuel load incase there was a problem and had to land again. If all was OK the KC 10 would air refuel and be away. Repositioning to Fairford has cut out the middle man.
Re: Notam today 18th
Even by using Mildenhalls strengthened over run for take off's, giving it about 10,220ft, its still not long enough for a fully fuelled B-52 to safely operate from - all to do with stopping distance available in an aborted take off I believe. Fairford's runway is a few feet short of 10,000ft Seen hundreds of B-52 take offs from Fairford but don't recall seeing any go beyond the 3,000ft to go marker board. May have used the short hop to Fairford to make a Functional Check Flight to be sure all systems were working ok prior to the long trip home.alhenderson wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 12:08 pmCan a fully fuelled B-52 not get off the runway at Mildenhall, then?
