Insurance

Post by Alfie » Mon Jul 15, 2019 12:11 am

Can anybody explain to me what insurance is necessary for display teams to be able to fly at airshows the Royal Jordanian Falcons did not fly at Yeovilton yesterday and were only on static diplay. When questioning one of the team members, he said they couldn't fly because they did not have adequate insurance but he said they would be flying at RIAT.

I believe its called 3rd party indemnity insurance or Public Liabilty Insurance. to cover the insured in case they injure/kill or damage something through their actions. ie crashing. its normally for a sum around £1 million. Maybe Yeovilton required more. Everyone who flies any sort of flying machine should have it just in case.

It's a hell of a lot more than £1m to display at a military base now

Thank you for all your replies, the one thing I can't understand is although the Falcons couldn't fly at Yeovilton they were pretty sure they would be displaying at RIAT this coming weekend.

Could be as simple as cost. Someone has to pay for the insurance and if the budget didn’t stretch to it for Yeovilton then perhaps that’s why they were static only. It could also be sponsored for RIAT, seeing the strong connection between the display and the Jordanian Royal Family.

The displayed quite happily and successfully at Old Warden last weekend, must be a Yeovilton specific thing.

MOD don't own Old Warden? Therefore indemnity must be within their cover for Shuttleworth! It's all in the wording linked above. ;)

The Jordanian's only had £30 mil insurance. That's why they didn't fly this year at Yeovilton.

I run a free community music festival, about 2,000 punters at most. The PLI cover requirement is £10m so an airshow with with much higher risk and thousands of visitors will be a lot more. I dread to think what the premium is.
