A10 65 Field access
Re: A10 65 Field access
Well said, Mark: the voice of sanity and reason as usual

Re: A10 65 Field access
It's a shame that the visiting aircraft no longer park near the Warren. Plenty of public access and no hassles.I assume that after the HAS sites were built it left parking space in the current area.
Re: A10 65 Field access
I have visited Lakenheath a couple of times over the last few weeks.
I used the field to view the visiting F-15s before I became aware of the Stone Curlew issue and before any signs had been erected.
When I became aware of the issue, I walked along the verge by the main road and managed to bag all the planes I wanted to see with a little bit of 'hiking and persistence'.
Simple really. Play by the rules and you should still be able to catch what you want to see.
Plane spotting / aviation enthusing (particularly military) has never been a interest for the lazy - although obviously I'm sure we would all prefer a 'drivethrough facility' at all airfields, so we can read stuff off at will.

If we lose this spot, is there any particular place on Maidcross Hill where you can at least see any visitors? Any time I have been up there, there seem to be buildings in the way and it's difficult to count exactly how many are there without being sure you are avoiding duplication.

Re: A10 65 Field access
Maidscross is difficult and needs some effort. We went a while back and were able to ID some aircraft (I'm thinking possibly "JZ" F15s?) with a bit of persistnce and a decent pole on a tripod! You just need to be patient and take your time, obviously keeping to the high ground as much as you can.
That said, park (responsibly) down by the Forest entrance and if you don't mind the walk you can work your way along the fence up towards the golf course anyway.

Re: A10 65 Field access
Everyone should be aware that if you park carefully opposite the Golf Course and then walk North towards Brandon to the bend in the road you can sometimes get a good view of the visitors ramp dependant upon the trees in between you and the aircraft.Remember to park away from the road.
Re: A10 65 Field access
Think you will find signs as part of the clearway that parking on the verges is as prohibited as on the road
Re: A10 65 Field access
“A 24 hour clearway applies to the main carriageway only of any given road it is placed on. This means that a vehicle may stop and/or park in a designated parking bay (provided it is not really part of the main carriageway) or on the verge if an obstruction to the highway is not created. This can be prevented by the use of an additional Traffic Regulation Order that prohibits either waiting or stopping on the verge.”
Seemingly it doesn’t

Re: A10 65 Field access
Sadly old chap it does as there are the additional signs present prohibiting either waiting or stopping on the verge.
Re: A10 65 Field access
Park in the small area off the road adjacent to the field.

"At any time on verge" supplementary signs are visible on Google Maps street view with an image date of August 2016. The posts certainly don't look new and I'm fairly sure the restriction has been in place far longer.

Re: A10 65 Field access
I remember Mr Plod booking all vehicles on the verge at Waddington A15 years ago; I asked him about where we were parked behind the imaginary line of the road-side hedges in the (closed) crashgate area. We were ok, being told the Clearway is all the way to road-side hedges or walls; a bloke further along in a 4x4 reversed his vehicle through the hedge into the field- don't know if he got away with it!
If there's no clearway signs, but a road has a continuous white line by the kerb treat it as a clearway.

Re: A10 65 Field access
What's the latest on field access please? Other sites are quoting that it's 'open' again?
Thanks

Re: A10 65 Field access
I was there early this morning.
Saw no Curlews. No signs. No police.
Saw a few spotters though.
