There's a couple of large and medium scale exercises on starting from tomorrow mate. Both using spadeadam range at some point. Large formations of fast jet assets, but mostly helo activity. Think I might be around there at some point over the next couple of weeks so I may see you around

Where's a good place to go - particularly for photography?

Any advice would be welcomed!

That's nothing to do with spadeadam frank. There's 2 exercises on this week and next. Spadeadam will see more traffic than usual.

The range is 1000 square miles so it's a case of pot luck if you see anything

Hey mark! Welcome to the site ;)

there's a few little places around the lakes. Places on the m6 are quite accessable. I think there's a radio mast at the top of one of the hills on the m6 with road access so you don't actually have to leave the car. I'm sure someone in the area can be a bit more informative.

Enjoy the site buddy

Hello everyone ;)
I'm Mark, 38 ,from Barrow in Furness in Cumbria,
Been interested in Aviation most of my life,
Got an SLR a few years ago and have over the last year and a half started using it 'properly' ie took it off auto
I use an Olympus E-500 and have recently purchased a 70-300mm lens for it so should be getting abit closer to the action so to speak,

Hi Tys and welcome as an Oly user. Saw your queries on the E-Group Forum and hope you have lots of fun with the aviation photography and the new lens. As a fellow Oly user with the same lens when out doing low level aviation photography try to pick a sunny day (!!) to get the best out of it and to help the E-500 if auto-focusing. At times try manual focus using the switch on the side of the lens and the MF setting via the camera's LCD, and then use a reasonable aperture to get depth of field. And practice the panning - as others well know, it's an art that I'm a long way from mastering!

You'll get a lot of clues about good locations from various websites and Forums such as this, either directly from members or information provided or by checking out some of the photos for clues. But at a guess, easily reached locations, where you are above low flying aircraft yet close to roads, will always be a bit difficult in the Lakes. However a few visits to places like Thirlmere if & when aircraft are low flying will give you some ideas whether some of the lakeside parking areas may give reasonable opportunities for dad to be near the car and for you to do a short climb. A good place to start would possibly be on the high land to either side of Thirlmere dam. I think at these points any aircraft that has come down the lake will pass close by before curving over towards the north end of Derwentwater.
The other location that Pete mentions also seems good when there is traffic, and that is at the south end of the Lune gorge near the mast that sits above the M6 - there is a B road nearby but you should check access perhaps first.

Hope to see the results soon here or on E-Group!
