Abandoned, Forgotten and Burnt!!

Post by steve149c » Fri Sep 10, 2010 9:48 am

I wonder how many shots we can gather of the poor old "Rescue" Jets that were put to one side on the airfields for Fire Crew training, He is Phantom XT895 of 74 Sqn in the 1990's at RAF Valley,

Hi all,

Just the one digi pic from me, it's the rather sad looking Canberra B(I)8 WT338 at the RAF Barkston Haeth fire section, taken earlier this year.

I can recall seeing the remains of a 92Sqn Lightning at Coningsby in the 1980's (where the carpark is today). Regrettably I never got around to taking a picture of it, did anyone get a shot?

If successful, should be a shot of one of the Lightnings (XN774) circa 1994 before being buried under gravel.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

They were on the RAF Abingdon fire dump during the 80s. Fortunately someone had the initiative to save the unique Canberra B2/8 WV787 as it's now preserved at Newark.

Seemingly abandoned and forgotten, but gladly not burned - these three poor classics still sat out in the scorching sun and right opposite the sea last week.
I first saw these two Shackletons, WL747 and WL757 after 8 Sqd. first delivered them out to Paphos (Cyprus)some years back when they packed up at Lossiemouth and re-equipped with the Sentry's at Waddington - some Greek tycoon I think planned to make them into a restaurant or similar attraction. Here they are now moved over into the south west corner of the airport, along with the ex. French AF Dassault Flamant No.250 and all still awaiting something.
Can somebody not rescue those Griffons :(

Something quite sombre about all these images, in some cases its a bit "lump in the throat"! :'(

Indeed, these once magnificent birds of the sky, now left in a forgotten corner, or worse by some of the photos.
