The closest I'd been to seeing one up to that point was my Matchbox 1/72 kit! I went almost every year thereafter until it's demise. A truly great show with always a surprise item or two. This was the last truly memorable Finningley show for me. What really made it outstanding were the old/new formations and the B-52 display. The next year's final show whilst good on paper, was spoiled by the weather(overcast/strong wind/very cold)
which made for challenging viewing conditions resulting in an early exit.

Finningley 87. Gosh memories of being bussed up there from Swinderby to do car parking duties. I recall it being an absolutely miserable day, with incessant rain and numerous vehicles getting stuck in the mud. The poor aircrew cadets from Finningley were all in No1 uniform, while we were in Combats. They got covered in mud trying to push buses out of the quagmire, while we just laughed.

My only memory of the flying that day was the Vulcan displaying under the cloud level, which didn’t leave much room above ground level.

Hi aenstrop. The horrible conditions you describe cannot have been the '87 show which took place in pretty much perfect weather conditions. Altho' there certainly were a few weather affected shows incl. one in the late 70s which was fogbound (the only flying display a/c which could be seen were the outline of the Vulcan and the Tornado reheat) I can't recall any as bad as you describe. The only one I missed was '88 which clashed with my daughter's B'day bash so could possibly have been that one.
