Finningley 1993

Post by SW Sky Blue » Mon Aug 29, 2022 2:30 pm

Busy trying to move house so not had time for posting recently...however, Sorting through some stuff in the loft and found a bag of prints including these from the static at Finningley Sept 1993...

Scan quality isn't the best. ...

Nice, they look pretty good to me.

Mmmm... IS F-15s rarely seen/photographed by myself, just the pair at Fairford 87 found so far.

Thanks for sharing

I remember it well! The IS Eagles were a very nice surprise when walking down the static line. Thanks for sharing 👍

It was always a nice surprise when some IS Eagles turned up at any base. Nice set.

Suppose it depends where your local base was if the Kef Eagles were rare, as were more or less weekly visitors to Lossie back in the day😆

This was the last truly memorable Finningley show for me. What really made it outstanding were the old/new formations and the B-52 display. The next year's final show whilst good on paper, was spoiled by the weather(overcast/strong wind/very cold)
which made for challenging viewing conditions resulting in an early exit.

Thanks for sharing these, some nice shots there. Finningley always seemed to attract some interesting visitors. A sadly missed show.

My first Finningley was '87. My old schoolmate went the year before and took great joy in showing me his photos of the Viggen! 😲 A real rarity back then. The closest I'd been to seeing one up to that point was my Matchbox 1/72 kit! I went almost every year thereafter until it's demise. A truly great show with always a surprise item or two. Thanks for the memories

Brings back great memories of my local Air show - was the best one day Air show in the country.

My 1st Finningley show was in the 60s, with a white Vulcan safety scramble being the highlight. Other notable displays included first RAF Harrier VTOL demo, 4 x 48 LN F100s tactical assault demo with Andover and ground attack Hunters. They don't make em like they used to..

Finningley 87. Gosh memories of being bussed up there from Swinderby to do car parking duties. I recall it being an absolutely miserable day, with incessant rain and numerous vehicles getting stuck in the mud. The poor aircrew cadets from Finningley were all in No1 uniform, while we were in Combats. They got covered in mud trying to push buses out of the quagmire, while we just laughed.

My only memory of the flying that day was the Vulcan displaying under the cloud level, which didn’t leave much room above ground level.

Happy Days.

Hi aenstrop. The horrible conditions you describe cannot have been the '87 show which took place in pretty much perfect weather conditions. Altho' there certainly were a few weather affected shows incl. one in the late 70s which was fogbound (the only flying display a/c which could be seen were the outline of the Vulcan and the Tornado reheat) I can't recall any as bad as you describe. The only one I missed was '88 which clashed with my daughter's B'day bash so could possibly have been that one.

I was going through basic training at the time, and that was Aug-Sep 87, and the only time I was ever at Finningley. The weather was definitely, as we say, dreich. Was it a 2 day show back then, that might explain the weather difference.

I'm sure 87 was a very dull and dismal and maybe drizzly? by my memory. Think the arrivals were sunny though. Think 88 and 89 were ok though?
