Finningley '89 - Tigershark pic appeal

Post by F3 » Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:44 am

This is probably a long shot but I wonder if anyone has a pic of the Northrop Tigershark which was on static display @ the above show?

Surely it would have been all over the Aviation Press if it had attended, wonder if it was one of those many most looked forward too, much hyped participants which at the last minute cancelled even after the programmes were printed.....?

Scramble lists a Tigershark "80483" but that is a typo for Tigercat. As far as I can tell one appeared at Farnborough in 1984 and that seems to be it for the UK.

Digging through my logs, F7F Tigercat Bu80483/ N6178C was at Finningley show in 1989, but definitely no F-20 Tigershark.
But F-20 Tigershark N3986B was at Farnborough Show in 1984.
Hope this helps.

Given that 2 of the 3 prototypes crashed in 1984 and 1985, the project was abandoned in 1986. I think it is a certainty it wasn't the F-5G

Glyn, could you be thinking of an aggressor F-5E with a bort number 20 on the nose? I did all the Finningley shows from 1975 and pretty sure I didn’t see the Tigershark.

F-5A 220 Norwegian Air Force is the most likely candidate.

viewtopic.php?t=171593

As said the first two crashed 82-0062/63
The 3rd 82-0064 would most definately have been grounded by 89 and probably hanging from the California Science Center roof.
The only chance an F-20 was actualy there would be in mock up form or the 4th unfinished 82-0065. (I would be interested to know what happened to that frame) very unlikely as the project had already been cancelled.

Further digging....

looking at Finningly from 87 to 91 only 3 F-5s attended, the above 220 and K3039 NF.5A and K4016 NF.5B all in 89.

Agree with the comments about Finningley 1989, Norwegian F-5A 220 was present, also F-5B 908 was there, both of 336 Skv. The two Dutch aircraft were also present. I assume the USAF F-5Es had returned to the States by this time I believe, replaced by F-16s at Bentwaters.

There was no Farnborough air show in 1989 so why would a Tigershark be in the UK?.

The '89 Finningley show was over 3 months after the '89 Paris show!

and 6 years after it was at Paris, pointless carrying on with this now, it just was not at Finningly! I'm thinking this thread is now keeping a troll happy.

I can recall at the Finningley 82(or 83) show, speaking to an elderly chap who was excited about "the Tigershark" in the static. He wouldn't have it when I pointed out to him that it was one of the F-5E "Aggressor" Tigers from Alconbury. I left him to it, bless him

One would have thought that if elderly gentleman knew what the 'Tigershark' was in the first place, he would have realised that it was a single-engined machine, which is a fairly distinguishing feature from the other F.5 family!!. However, I'm old and sometimes don't know which day of the week it is!. :S :S
