Lossie 77-78 Part 1

I recently came across a couple of photo albums I have of aircraft I photographed while serving at Lossie in the late 70's. These were all taken on Kodak Instamatic's using 110 cartridges. The quality isn't the greatest but I'm putting these up and if there is any interest in them I've got quite a few more. I've stored these by registration and this sample is of RAF aircraft but I've got another 200 odd, of aircraft of various air forces I managed to take over the period 1977-78.

Very nostalgic collection, many thanks for sharing! Intrigued by number 7....a C-140 (I think) and a trials Canberra with a pointy nose. Can you throw any light on the purpose of the latter?

The Canberra PR3 WE173 was used by the meteorological research flight

Some interesting shots, not bothered by the quality, it's the rarity of some of the subjects. There must be albums full of similar photos in existence, but really enjoyed seeing these. Canberra WE173 was the Met Research aircraft, until replaced by Hercules XV208. That Canberra ended up at Coltishall, where it was used for fire and rescue training, until remains went for scrapping.

It is indeed a C140 Jetstar Pete. A lovely aircraft, (a mini VC10). I've got a better picture of it in the American folder that I'll post later. I forgot to add the details of each aircraft so have edited to add. Info is from what I wrote on the back of the pic at the time, so apologies if there are any errors.

Scottish Air News gives the Canberra visiting on the 18th May & "VCl40B Jetstar 24198 OL-A/89thMAW USAF." on the 19th.
Not sure what OL-A is but it would usually signify a code

"OL-A" I guess might by "Operating Location A" - overseas, maybe Ramstein based at that time ?

This Jetstar is the one that ended up as BDRT at Mildenhall

Afraid I can't recall that far back, but the Canberra may have been there for more than a day. I'll post a pic of the C140 when I get around to doing the American visitors, but the info I have written on the back of the pic is, 62-4198 VC140B 89MAW 780519. It isn't the greatest of pics but I can't see "OL-A" anywhere on the airframe.

A lovely reminder of how things used to be and the variety of types to be seen almost on a daily basis at many airfields.

Not often you drew a blank for visitors unless (A) the weather was bad or (B) a 115 Sqn calibrator turned up!
