Falkland Islands Typhoons?

Post by jackjak92 » Mon Jun 24, 2019 11:34 am

Afternoon everybody, hope you are all well.

I was thinking with the QRA at the weekend for the commercial flight and also earlier in the year for the Russians, how often do the Typhoons ever scramble from Mount Pleasant for a live QRA?

Many thanks

Jack

Surely best to ask the Argentines?

As often as they need to is the actual answer. :)

Imagine that a 'freedom of information act' request could be made.

In '85 F-4 one real scramble in 4 months. No notice practices. Plus daily practice interceptions, and other sorties. Those aiframes had a high usage rate.
I FEAR NOTHING 'NIL TIME' 501 SQUADRON MOTO.

I wonder if the typhoons in the Falklands are geared up for surface warfare

A search suggests air defence is primary, ground attack secondary role.

A quick search of the results of SDSR 15 will have told you the retention of Tranche 1 Typhoons for Air Defence only. That they have also added them to 9 Sqn for DACT is a bonus.

Other Tranches do the AtoG stuff

When were you there in '85? I arrived in mid-November through to March '86 at Stanley. I can recall one live scramble of the F4s as I spent a hot Boxing Day afternoon in Penguin Radar ............
They can call it what they want
