Afternoon Chaps (and Ladies)

Something a bit different from previous posts as I am attempting to scan some old prints. Came across these and wondered if they would be of interest. Taken back in 1985 and scanned from prints so please excuse the quality. Cannot find details of the aircraft on the Scramble database so if anybody has any info please feel free to post

Not many worth posting but a bit different

Seem to recall this show was slightly marred by a RAF Phantom blowing a tyre on take off and the navigator ejecting (right in front of my brother and I) before it got airborne. Unfortunately his chute did not fully deploy before he hit the ground. Later found out that he was OK but spent sometime in hospital after. The Phantom landed safely back at Lyneham if I remember correctly

Well done for posting photos of the Fulton Recovery System in operation. Although demonstrated quite often by 7 SOS, you don't often see any photos.

An AFCC T-39. :grr: I gave up (for 25 years) after Fairford 1985 and had only managed to see two of their C-140s.

Also, I see one of the drone Sea Vixens lurking behind the Sled.

Lovely set of pictures. :thumb: Got any more??

Some real memory jerkers there :thumb:

I remember the Fulton system demo at the 'Hall well ;)

I also remember the low altitude para extraction demo more than well: we had to run for cover as the packages on their sleds came careering toward us in the strong wind :Wow:

Good stuff Darren, as has been said previously about the rescue herc and its demo,very impressive to see and for me a first ,I had only seen those 130s on the ground
and heard about the rescue extraction from other spotters. Good scans and I hope you might put more up..JB :thumb:

Two quite major mistakes in the post - and these before I had touched a drop on new year's eve. Thanks Arthur and Bob for the corrections

Cheers Patrick - can remember the LAPES demos too but cannot remember the pallets going off course. Can remember some USAF parajumpers at one of the shows being caught in strong winds and ending up landing in various fields around the base!

Surprising how that MC-130 stays in the air in the photos - just look at the prop blur!!!

Thanks for these great shots from the days when this Air-show was a big deal. I seem to recall the post 'Gulf War 1' show was really good also, with many Desert schemes, nose-art (Buster Gonad Jag et al) & mission marks.
Regarding the 1984 pairs F4 take-off incident, It was AFAIK 'officially' attributed to nose-wheel steering failure (not blowout) which caused the #2 a/c (XV569 'Q') to veer onto the grass, corrected by rudder control, too fast to abort take-off & also set-fire to the parched grass (very dry summers before Global Warming you know?) during rotation. Flames observed at rear of a/c = Nav' ejects in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Aircraft climbs away safely minus back-seater. Sadly I think the Navigator Flt Lt Pete Humphreys (43 Sqn a late substitute for the 111 Sqn. Nav' who got a better offer!) suffered serious injuries when his chute failed to fully deploy.
As noted previously, after burning/dumping fuel for 45 minutes the Leuchars based aircraft recovered safely to RAF Lyneham MDA. taking the approach-end arrestor wire.
PS:- do we have designated MDA (Master Diversion Airfield) which changed to MEDA (Military Emergency Diversion Aerodrome) anymore, or is it just the one that's not shut YET!
