Surely you’d be better off asking that question on Sunday and not two days before. It has done about 5 ground engine runs so I believe it requires and engine change.

It could just be the spare spare? They’re flying a couple of jets a couple of times a week, so may not require it. BTFs usually bring spare jets.

Didn't know were else to put this. I've seen many B-1 take off's over the years and they are ear shattering to say the least. Last week I took my mate to Fairford to witness his first B-1 take off after I had been banging on about how loud they are for as long as I can remember. We went to the 27 end and stood almost behind it. For some reason the sound from this position just did not do it justice at all, I've also noticed at Lakenheath that the sound when you're directly behind the F-15's is nowhere near as loud as when you are side on to them. I'm sure there's a simple Scientific answer to this but what is the reason for this? In my mind behind them should in theory be louder than being at the side of them.

I suspect your hearing has changed as you've got older, and the wind will have a big influence on how loud they sound and it's been quite breezy at Fairford lately.

Luke, the noise is greatest at the 45 degree radials from the axis of the jet, front and rear, with it at its loudest at 15-45 degrees either side at the rear of the jet. Quietest is directly in front followed by directly behind, there is indeed a scientific reason for it based around the shear effects of the efflux in still air. If you want the full noise experience the loudest position can be plotted and my guess would put it close to the perimeter fence gate opposite the bomb dump, if there are buildings in the way it will effect the power/volume.
Due to the small distances involved the impact of the wind, unless it exceeds the airfield/aircraft operating limits, will be negligible that close to the runway threshold
Edit: If you look at modern turbofan engines fitted to the 787 for example, you can see an attempt to reduce the efflux shear effects with chevron exhaust and fan ducts which are designed with saw tooth trailing edges to try and break up the efflux/still air interface, this has the effect of reducing the noise generated. It does however also have negative effects on the thrust from the engine.

Is there an official end to this deployment? I have one day left of holiday from work so was thinking of trying to get over at some point but only have this Friday or Friday 12th November that would be suitable. I know I may not get to see them flying from 1 days leave so might even try to Thursday off unpaid. I haven't seen the b1 flying for a good few years now and really want to see one again.
Any information would be much appreciated,

Also don’t forget that atmospheric conditions can alter the noise levels as well. Damp/light rain as well as frosty conditions can greatly increase the decibels.

I had a chat with one of the 'bird scarer' people on Wednesday when I paid a visit and he said that it's a six week deployment. I can't verify the statement so please note the health warning.Is there an official end to this deployment? I have one day left of holiday from work so was thinking of trying to get over at some point but only have this Friday or Friday 12th November that would be suitable.
