I have it down as departing Mildenhall on the 24th January 2009 along with 86-0109/DY if it helps.

Its only previous visit to Fairford was in Nov 2002 with 85-074/DY and 86-123/DY. Although it was assigned to the 7BW and flown by a 9BS crew it still wore the `GA` tail code of its former unit the 128BS Georgia ANG.

I believe 86-0124 was the first B-1B to visit the UK when it appeared in the static of the Lakenheath Air Show on 27 August 1988. If my log is correct it was then operated by 384 BW.

Because my brain has a strong need for order, I am trying to resolve whether the U-2S 80-1083 with pod attached that arrived yesterday afternoon with callsign 86 was eastbound or westbound.

I believe that 083 arrived Fairford as DRAGN88 11-Jul-17 and departed as DRAGN53 12-Jul-17, which implies that it went east. I can't see any mention/photo of it with a pod on top, not that it's particularly relevant. Yesterday's 083 arrived in the afternoon from the north - according to someone at the airfield with a scanner - either as DRAGN86 (an 'eastbound' callsign consistent with a northerly arrival) or maybe the unusual FERRY86 callsign also mentioned.

Now although I may be influenced by seeing photos of 80-1076 flying at Beale two weeks ago with 077 on the nosewheel door into thinking mysterious thoughts, but surely if 083 went east a month ago, it should be arriving yesterday from the south, not the north? Unless it's been round the world.

So 80-1083 if westbound, I guess that it came on a more northerly route, North Sea, rather than English Channel route, which explains why it was on Central frequencies (not South) and appeared to come from the North. Happy now!

It came in as Ferry 86 from the north east , initially picked him up on 133.325 descending through 'FL650' (I posted on HU&OTT as he descended). I was at Fairford & it had the 'Span' fairing mounted . Maybe its a deployment rather than a swap .Could it have flown a mission 'en route' to Fairford from Akrotiri ?

You could phone the base and ask if it'd been on an operational mission and if it had where it'd flown? After all, it doesn't seem as though it was a regular ferry flight.
