Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Thanks much appreciated.
Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Please note that the photo in that 'story' is of the penultimate SR-71 leaving the UK, not a photo depicting the 'story'.hernaman86 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 1:12 pmA good story

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
I live on the old flight path to RAF Alconbury (Oundle) and I remember seeing a SR-71 on approach.
Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
I filmed an SR-71 make a PD to Alconbury when there was a deployment of Shaw RF-4C's there.Madhatter492 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:45 pmI live on the old flight path to RAF Alconbury (Oundle) and I remember seeing a SR-71 on approach.
Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
I used to live under the Cranwell approach and remember an SR71 flying right over the house on a PD possibly for a passing out parade. No radio then - early/mid1980s - and never saw a serial.
Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
When I was at Marham in the 80's a message came over the tannoy. Blackbird approaching in 10 minutes for flypast, which was very impressive!!
Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Still gutted to have never seen one operational. I've only seen Duxford's Blackbird.

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
One even performed an overshoot at Valley in the late 80's. Apparently the Habu pilot was on exchange there when he had the "call"

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Infact if I'm not mistaken, I think it may have been Rich Graham (I stand to be corrected as I haven't checked yet)

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Thats potentially unlikely (but not impossible) since Rich Graham was selected In June of 1987 to become the Wing Commander of the 9th SRW, where he remained until November 1988. As the Wing Commander, he was responsible for 10,000 personnel and their dependents on base, over 85 Air Force aircraft deployed around the globe, and a base of 22,000 acres in northern California. He was assigned to the 14th Air Division, Beale AFB, until he retired on 30 September 1989.roughcutter wrote: ↑Wed Sep 16, 2020 8:18 amInfact if I'm not mistaken, I think it may have been Rich Graham (I stand to be corrected as I haven't checked yet)

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Admittedly that was a bit of a wild guess, but I do know for certain that the Habu pilot was at Valley when he got "the call", hence the flypast. I would surmise that VAS will probably have it on record.

Re: SR-71 Blackbird question
Alconbury show flyby (84?) c/s was 'Oiler'.
