Last nights storms seemed to fizzle out when they came across the English Channel & then moved out over the North Sea. Had lots of heavy rain last night, but no thunderstorm.

There was a huge storm cell to the west of Colchester around mid day today, I could see the flashing, but it was too far away to hear any thunder from it. The clouds were a menacing purple colour and the storm looked to be heading northwards along the Essex / Hertfordshire border, it was a monster!

Jealous jealous jealous. What's a 'storm chaser' without storms? Not a happy one! :(

Yes, its a plume situation whereby throughout Friday Night into Saturday morning some areas of the eastern SW region and south and central areas will see decent light shows. Then on Saturday afternoon all hell breaks loose in the Midlands and East Anglia/London areas.
Pretty much similar to the events last year which saw rather serious storms over Waddington.

Can't rule out a supercell or two with tornado events for Saturday. Jealous? Yes, as i can't get that far to go and see.

Main risk i see is Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Greater London, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Kent/East Sussex etc.

Could be some serious hail events too and localised flash flooding.

Potentially very dangerous situation on Friday and Saturday for across the water in Benelux and France

Any chance of CGY evacuating aircraft to a safe location (Yeovilton :-P ) like the Yanks do when a Hurricane hits the atlantic coast - Sweeds, Crabs and Italians :-)

Any ideas what Sunday weather is looking like over Essex way? I've got to do some work on my car and I really don't fancy laying under it in a Thunderstorm.

If the storms really kick up on Fri / Sat then I will be taking a trip down to the local seafront for a front seat... in the safety of my car of course!

Just started hammering down with rain in Chippenham, one rumble of thunder in the past 5 minutes.

The plume initiated over west Cornwall last night around 2100 then it went quiet for a bit before the Nantes storm developed further as it moved north finally coming ashore around 3.30-3.45am. Devon, Somerset, Dorset got the worst of that before it moved up to the north towards Birmingham.

Still early yet for further initiation in the east Midlands/East Anglia... give it an hour or two more.

Had two storms roll into Colchester this morning about 45 mins apart, both came in from the Thames Estuary.

These were very rapidly moving storms, dark purple clouds with strong wind and heavy rain, they passed over within 20 mins each, with just a couple of rumbles of thunder then bright blue sky & sunshine for the rest of the day. It is still very close and sticky outside at the moment.

Noticed on Metcheck that a few more storms have fired up over France in the last hour or so, but I'm not sure which way they will track?

As this is a long-running thread about thunderstorms, can the Mon/Tues bit of the subject title be dropped.
Being an afficionado of thunderstorms, I shall now be following this interesting thread......keep up the good work! :D

Two probably supercells today, one that went over Gainsborough near Doncaster and another near Leicester and went on to Kirton Lindsey.

I know it's not the UK, but I've spent the evening watching various Webcams in Germany following a huge storm. (I had a choice between monitoring the B2 and this Storm, and the Storm won).
It has been staggering to watch all the lightning whereby 23,772 Strikes have occurred in 2hours.
I've never seen anything like it and being honest, I can only imagine it would have been quite frightening to be underneath it.

Phil,
Yes, you and me both. They had a pretty decent MCS with more following in behind so they will have a restless morning.
I remember a few times down here, having an MCS (Spanish plume initiated) and we topped 19,000 strikes in a couple of hours. The MCS covered the whole of the SW region and into Wales and in all lasted 8 hours....with lightning every 3-4 seconds. Not sure on the end tally of sferics.

The MCS in Germany started in France as always and as of a few hours ago turned in a Bow Echo before the classic split. There was a huge supercell embedded into the MCS creating 12cm wide hailstones in places. (It let loose 10cm hail in France)...
