I think Russia could have smoothed things over, by making sure the Ukrainian military units get wages,
during this standoff, a Russian officer going into the Ukrainian barracks handing out some, what could
be called compensation money, would keep things calm.

It is a non-story based on hype. Paet is discussing rumours that he heard. Paet was simply discussing a conspiracy theory.
Ukraine crisis: bugged call reveals conspiracy theory about Kiev snipers

The Estonian foreign ministry confirmed the leaked conversation was accurate. It said: "Foreign minister Paet was giving an overview of what he had heard in Kiev and expressed concern over the situation on the ground. We reject the claim that Paet was giving an assessment of the opposition's involvement in the violence."

From BBC coverage.
(BBC) 16:15:

A doctor at the centre of claims that snipers shot people on both sides of the protests in Ukraine last month denies telling Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet that policemen and protesters had been killed in the same manner (See 15:28).

Or its 100% true and accurate! You can hardly expect the west to agree with it, it would harm the image of their little darlings in Kiev!

According to Reuters, the Pentagon is sending a further six F-15s and one KC-135 to "augment" the NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic states. They will be deployed this week - so one to look out for. There are already four Eagles from the 48th at Lakenheath taking part in the Air Policing mission based out of Šiauliai, Lithuania - the 48th Fighter Group began a four month rotation on this NATO duty in January. I assume the additional F-15's will also come from Lakenheath. * Note - I've posted this in the Ukraine thread as - errrr - I think this development is related to the current situation!
The Baltic mission has been going for 10 years now - see: http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/news_106114.htm

Mr Putin said that military action will be a last resort?... So I take it that hauling all those Russian troops and equipment over the border in the first place was just a political move?

I'm surprised he hasn't grown a nose like Pinocchio after telling that one!

And there's plenty more where that came from!

The local Anglia news confirmed they are indeed LN units flying out, in direct response to the current situation.

I also just read that some Ukrainian internet useres noticed in one of the photos one of the soldiers forgot to take off his name tag. Searching for him on vkontakte (the Russian facebook) they found him, with information on his page about his Russian military unit (GRU, military intelligence).
Woah!!!
Russia has its own facebook?! Opening up whole new thought processes for me, that one :D

We should qualify this to give it the correct perspective.
The Baltic nations that are members of NATO have as a result of the Ukraine situation asked for NATO to enhance its protection of them under Article 4.
This is more about reassuring the populations of these countries, than defending against a current Russian threat.

While it is true that Fighter Control is an aviation forum, I believe the Fighter Control Mess was set up to talk about what ever you wanted. Naturally, most of the posts that you will find do focus on aviation. However, as it is a collection point for all things that don't belong in the other sub-sections, you could talk about the family cat if you wanted... or in your case, why the wompat is grumpy... :P

Sorry, couldn't resist... just trying to lighten things up a little

Cheers

You're right

terribly sorry about that

I guess the politics should go there too (if you feel you really must let it go there)

Thanks again for bringing that to my attention
