VALLEJO Colour matches for RAF / RN Colours

Post by binbrook87 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 6:17 pm

Took the plunge to swap from enamels to acrylics for Brush Painting recently, and following a recommendation that Vallejo Model Colour is the best Acrylic out there for the job, I have been experimenting to see if I can get some matches 'straight from the bottle' .....cos I hate mixing!

Thought some of you guys might find this useful. I have tried to match to Xtracolor RAF / RN WWII paints.

Dark Slate Grey (X25) - V924 Russian Uniform WWII. Really hard one to match! This one is the closest but maybe a tad on the green side?
Extra Dark Sea Grey (X5) - V867 Dark Blue Grey
Sky (X7) - V885 Pastel
Dark Sea Grey (X4) - V836 London Grey
Ocean Grey (X3) - V869 Basalt Grey
Medium Sea Grey (X3) - V870 Medium Sea Grey
Medium Stone (X9) - V882 Middlestone. Worst colour to match, this one is the closest although maybe too yellow?
Light Stone (X29) - V914 Green Ochre
Dark Earth (X2) - V921 English Uniform.....OR V873 U.S. Field Drab. Both close matches
Dark Green (X1) - V95 U.S. Dark Green
Azure Blue (X26) - V943 Grey Blue. Another difficult one to match and this is about the closest.
PRU Blue (X8) - V904 Dark Blue Grey

If anyone has found better matches let me know............especially that Middle Stone and Dark Slate Grey! :grr:

cheers :)

Thanks for posting, very helpful

You are correct on Vallejo being top drawer. Their Model Air paints (black top) are slightly thinner than the Model Color (white top) and can be brush painted without leaving brush strokes

No worries Steve. Can you brush paint 'model air' paint as I thought it was very thin? :S

Yes you can no problem - might take two coats

This is the Vallejo model air black brushed on - no loss of detail and amazing coverage. Model air is always first choice for me to paint with on brush
