Norfolk Crash sites 1939-now

Post by crashman » Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:40 am

I am trying to compile a detailed record of all military aircraft crashes in norfolk within these dates, can anybody help me ? i already have hundreds if not thousands of sites, but if anyone can give detailed accounts tht would be great. i am particularly intrested in German wartime crashsites and the reported loss of several hunters around swaffham on the same day. any help would be appreciated.

Have you got a copy of "Broken Wings" by JJ Halley, published by Air-Britain? Expensive but worthwhile.
I have a vague recollection of the Hunter incident - didn't they run out of fuel near West Raynham? I'll have a dig round and get back to you!

The link above has some valuable information I think you may be interested in.
A bitter irony for me is that I have only just tonight realised my late father was stationed at the Central Fighter Establishment at West Raynham when this happened. Sadly he's no longer with us so I can't ask him about it. It was his first posting after training, he and my Mum lived in King's Lynn.

Anyway. hope it helps!

Sorry only just noticed this thread, have you seen the series of books by Merv Hambling called norfolk Crash Diaries 1939-40, 1941 & 1942 (three books). A5 size books published mid 90s lists all Norfolk Crashes for those years includes basic info date, serial, unit, where & brief description. Nice set, dont know if he published any more in the series beyond these.

Hi Crashman re the Hunters crashing, my uncle remembers one of them coming down in a field just off the Marham landing ground and the pilot being retrieved by a farmworker on a tractor!
