This was covered months ago. Terry got the answer from the Boss of Air Warfare Centre on a visit to Donna. When the flare dispenser is empty the note is produced.

See thread for info and photo.

An empty pod would make a great addition if the GR4 ever returned to the display circuit. Imagine the noise of two empty pods on a GR4?

No problem, Gord. A few weeks ago I experienced it first hand myself with two 41 Squadron GR4s doing a run and break at Coningsby.

It was over Midleton On The Wolds (E Yorks) this morning aprox 10.40 It realy is a great sound and loud. Loud enough to be heard over the two F15`s that were flyin over it in the opposite direction. Quite a sight that aswell.

Girlfriend has now lost all hope for me, I`m not just watching aircraft I`m noting down times and places to post here. I might aswell get my self a scope and a note book :P

Me and Dad heard it, in real life, for the first time this Tuesday.

Thank you ZA600 / EB-G and the peeps from 41 Sqn for your two great sorties at Cby.

I saw and heard a whining Tornado on Friday morning, it was overflying my house near Brough, heading towards the Humber Bridge. We get quite a few overflying ,but that's the first one that whined. Regards Paul.
