Question regarding Typhoons

Post by Unknown74 » Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:57 am

Only a couple of days ago I had a thought regarding the forthcoming Leuchars basing of Typhoons, now I know that at the moment 6 Sqn are expected to be the first to be based up here (knowing defence budgets and politics at the moment everything's likely to change - hope not, but who knows) in the latter half of this year (I think?) now the main point I was going to raise is seeing as 6 are forming at Coningsby with the Typhoon and some of the Squadron Staff are forming up, up here (I believe from what I've read and heard) are we likely to see detachments, visits and overshoots by 6Sqn Typhoons on a regular basis until they come to live?

Why has Leuchars been changed to a Typhoon Forward Operating Base, instead of being the 2nd Main Operating Base? Is it another MoD/ Goverment Defence Decision by Stealth??????????????????

it is a fwd base, becuase that is what it is, and always was planned to be. A main operating base, needs full behind the scenes backup facilities, such as servicing facilities. Leuchars was never earmarked for this. It will house 2 Sqns only, with most non Sqn based tasks covered at Coningsby.

I guess I've been reading the wrong things then, I read in some mags that Leuchars was to be the RAFs 2nd Typhoon Main Operating Base and that they were to have 3 Typhoon Squadrons - not 2 - Unless that due to all the various cuts has been changed and I haven't heard about it, I was only going by what I've heard if I've heard wrong I sincerely apologise. I'm sorry I cannot tell you where I heard/ read it.

You almost certainly did hear/read that it was the 2nd MOB, it's probably just the way it's been reported. There'll be little to differentiate it from Coningsby from the outside, although I don't think it'll be as busy as there'll be no OCU/OEU etc.

indeed, from the outside, you will see typhoons, but thats what it stops. Inside, it will differ completly, and will NOT have MOST of the facilites currently at CBy. To that extent, it will be a FOB, and not a MOB. Almost all support aspects are to be based at Cby. Yes we will have a few second line bays, but that is it. BAE support will be at Cby, Depth will be at CBY.

there will be no TMF at LEuchars. Any aircraft that are US will simply be fixed by the Sqn, as has always been the case. Please do not confuse what TMF, and TASF with tornado did. They do not fix broken aircraft, this carry out scheduled servicings much like your family car has at a dealership. Day to day faults are always fixed by the engineers on the Sqn

So, that will remain. When the 6 sqn Tyhpoons are due servicing, they will simply be flown to CBy.
