Lightnings @ RNAS Culdrose Airday 1987

A few negative scans from the '87 airday, which had a nice selection of RAF front line fighters with no less than 3 Lightnings, the only time Culdrose played host to this many on the deck............

lost my log for it years ago.. so seeing all them numbers there has made me a happy boy again
am i right in thinking that on departure one of the lightings could only get reheat on one of the engines? so took of with one burner lite??

BUZZER. It was quite usual to see Lightnings take off with only one reheat, or for that matter, no reheat alt all, depending on runway length. I have video of the last Lightning display at Mildenhall, which was done with no reheat at all on take off. It being a fuel critical machine, I guess they are simply saving fuel.

I know.. Thats why I asked the question
I seem to remember that seeing as culdrose has'nt got the longest of runways reheat was for takeoff. But on one of the lightnings only one. Of the burners would light? So she thunder down the runway with only the one reheat?
Offcorse I could be wrong. But remember being there on departure day,and for what ever reasion I have this stuck in my mind?! o

Lovely to see these again, Mark.Back in the days before i had a camera, my schooldays.The school would give us the option of a day off to attend the show, and i would also skive off the following to day to watch the departures.Practically everything would depart and then return for a high speed,low level beat-up of the runway,happy times.

Remember it well! Departure days would give better show than Friday itself!
Also remember skiveing of to walk out there because we had had a heads up for a visting type!!

Happy days indeed.

I was in the static area when "BE" taxied in and we were able to gather around as the pilot got out. Chris L greeted him like a long-lost friend saying, "Let me shake your hand, you are the first Lightning ever to land here, the runway was always too short before!", to which he said "Well I thought it was rather short today!"

Thanks for posting, who knows perhaps 2013 will be as good.
