Edit, and now a possible U-turn on the £8.3billion pledge for repairs to roads and pot holes are now in doubt. Reeves does a very good Poker Face

Peeps seem to have forgotten that we shouldn’t need a winter fuel allowance at all!!! and the very fact it was created is a reflection that some people were freezing to death in their own homes because they cannot afford to live.

Interesting to note whining about pay rises where in view of pensioners the whining should be about the same need to get by in life. The winter fuel allowance does this at the cheapest end of government support.

Also interesting to note there has always been pressure to make the winter fuel allowance means tested. Now that changes are announced some peeps act surprised, but I cannot see for why?

Or should we just be selfish and not worry about less well off no matter the reason?

Last winter I watched an advert on TV about keeping warm in winter. It showed an old lady sitting almost on top of a one bar electric fire to keep warm.. Ridiculous thing was that she had a short -sleeved cardigan on, so couldn't have been that cold!!. If you are cold and want to save money, buy some fleece blankets. We use them a lot in the winter when we are just in the lounge!. [Falling asleep watching rubbish TV>]

My 86 year old mum is keeping warm this winter by spending our inheritance on a Carribbean Cruise in January  - and good luck to her she is one of the fortunate ones. Forgot to mention with her 89 year old 'boy friend' :D

By the way HS2 was a Gordon Brown let's help the north idea - probably a good one but he budgeted a £40bn cost for both phase 1 + 2 : Never going to happen at that price but a good vote winner

She is indeed although it not entirely down to luck she does take care of herself ( if merlot or Primitivo were on prescription we will all be a bit better off!)

I see the planned nationalized rail company Great British Railways obviously needs a new head office to be built at Becketwell wherever that is - that will probably cost £1bn ( which seems to be the basic public sector unit) so us oldies are ready to pay up - perhaps means tested state pensions?

Good luck to your Mum!!. I bet she still has a sparkle in her eye!. We did our 'bucket list', and I finished my travels off with a boy's week-end in Dubai last October at aged 81. Still fit and well, but I have changed my mind about cruising, in that I don't feel it's the right thing to do any more Planet wise. If she hasn't done the Carib before, I'm sure she will love it. Did it three times, and the last one we won playing bingo for the first time with a couple that we met on board, so had a free one!. Never played bingo since. I have been blessed with good luck throughout my life, but appreciate it because my wife and I came from very humble beginnings. When I was 21 I didn't have a penny to my name. Meeting my wife got my brain in gear. Regards.

This thread is drifting and is being lightly moderated now. It was about the Chancellors Statement and not a general winge thread about everyone being better off then the poster.

Sorry about that

On a more light hearted note I saw a funny this morning saying the Government will be deporting pensioners instead of illegal immigrants as they are easier to round up

So if I disappear off here it's because I am waiting on a Calais beach for the next rubber dinghy back :)

Good luck to them, but be careful , Covid is still doing it’s rounds, my neighbours in their 60s just came back from a cruise and have come down with it very badly.

My post was about Derby once being a powerhouse of UK owned British Railway engineering and manufacturing, something long gone to overseas owned companies, mostly thanks to the Tories killing the industry.

What the point of having a general chat section if then you then have a mod decide it’s drifting. Surely that’s part of a general chat? If you (Ed’s) dont like it, then just remove this whole general chat section.

I personally wish we would, as do I think other mods but it survives at the moment.

Evening standard and from my 85 year old uncle!

From January 2024

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politic ... 30694.html

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has said the cost of living crisis has left her “increasingly short” financially, despite her £86,000 a year salary.

'The Labour MP has said she “winces” at her bank balance each month with her mortgage, gas, electricity and food bills all adding up

She made the confession during an interview on Friday when she announced that her party would fight to allow people to have greater financial freedom and pay less in bills. '

"Whether it's the mortgage, or the gas and electricity bills, the weekly shop, or all of the money we all spend over Christmas, it is putting a huge toll on family finances and I think very few people are not feeling the effects of that today.”

Ms Reeves earns £86,584 a year in basic salary from being an MP but would be on closer to £150,000 if Labour was to get into power and she was to become chancellor.

“I'd like people to have more of their own money in their pockets to spend in the way they choose,” she told GB News. “To do that in a way that's affordable, sustainable and fair you've got to grow the economy.”

I am not 100% sure but I think she is lacking empathy!

"She should try it on the basic state pension " says my uncle Ken !

(Oh ! It's not only Tory MPs who make errors of judgement

Labour MP Lauren Edwards made one of the most contemptible errors of judgement on so many levels )
