Some (Slightly) Older Leuchars Memories (Pic Heavy)

Post by Buccs2b » Fri Sep 15, 2023 10:10 am

Expanding on the theme...

Between 1990 -1995 I attended the RAF Leuchars BoB Shows, on the Enthusiasts' Package. Looking back it was a different time at the immediate end of the Cold War. During this period the RAF withdrew the Wessex from SAR duties, the Victor and the Buccanneer, the USAF also withdrew their F-111s from the UK.

Here's a selection, mainly arrivals but some static and show day shots.

Good luck

Great set. Particularly liking the F3s and that Eglin F-15. Someone ought to do a book on the Leuchars shows. They're certainly worthy of one and it's now probably the last unchronicled major show. Regrettably I don't have the material but if anyone fancies having a go I'm always happy to help/advise and I can recommend a publisher.

Brings back memories of doing Finningley arrivals on the Friday and then overnight train to Leuchars for the show. Happy Days😊😊

That is one eclectic, awesome, selection of airframes :Wow:

Us oldies are so lucky to have seen air displays like that, as they can never be repeated :'(

Thanks for posting

Magnificent set of images. Don’t think I appreciated what a superb variety of visitors these shows used to attract.

I can only concur with all the previous comments - always a nice varied selection of aircraft up at Leuchars. It was hard work getting up there on public transport but well worth the effort. Must find my old photo's. Great post.

Hey there Buccs2b, I'm actually in the rare position on these boards to admit that I was at most if not all of these shows I'm delighted to say, first was 1987 right through to the last one in 2013, great memories of all. If it hadn't been for an incompetent and useless Government Minister we would have still been enjoying the Shows today - and it probably would have been today too.....

Thanks for all the comments guys. It was definitely a different time,

I focused mainly on the visiting air arms for this thread, there are loads of Tornado F.3 shots I didn't share - especially from the around the HAS sites. Possibly a future post?

Thank you for bringing back some good memories of a sadly missed base.
I look forward to your F3 photos as it is my favourite version of the Tornado.
