Runway

I don't suppose anyone on here knows when will Lakenheath require a new runway. It must be getting pretty worn I know they had periods of patch ups.

I wonder where they would put the 50 / 60 aircraft based here while the runway was rebuilt ? Apart from Fairford the US have no spare airfields in the UK . Also at the moment many of their European bases have deployed aircraft in residence.
I suppose the F35 could go to european countries who also operate them and can offer specialist services needed. That just leaves the F15 to be spread around !
But I suppose it depends on how long the runway rebuild takes - 6 months/9 months or longer.

Now closed... but last time if my memory serves me right... they bolt holed to RAF Honington... quite a site seeing them all in a long line.

F-35s to Marham. Very local and quiet enough to take on their operations I would think. The pilots etc. could even drive to work each day !

F-15s to Mildenhall and/or Fairford. It's Lakenheath's turn in the sandpit next year so maybe whilst they are away would be an ideal opportunity.

There was talk of Marham being the F-35 overhaul centre for Europe wasn't there? Its more like sleepy hollow most days.

Yeah that's still the plan, but when that plan will come to fruition there's nothing on that.

Aren't you all jumping the gun a bit here? No one has actually said the runway is being rebuilt, have they?
If so, as said above, the F35's to Marham and the F15s to Mildenhall would probably be the best split.
