Gents,
Many thanks and apologises for causing a little confusion over on the days heads-up thread. Not that I get much chance nowadays to try it, but the long summer months which makes that side viable for the light is well worth a try, even just on the locals. I remember the final summer deployment of the old 81st FS A-10s out of Spangdahlem in 2012 from memory. A lot of us got some great shots in the summer evenings from that side.
My old 100-400 dates from 2006, so it's actually older than what I said earlier. It'e been refurbished twice by Canon, when we had a service/repair centre fairly local at Colchester, now sadly closed down. It 's been treated reasonably well, and doesn't get that much use nowadays unfortunately. I've no doubt the Mk2 is superior, having been able to compare shots side by side at Lakenheath with people using it on the same body, and the sharper image is clear to see. Unless it fails completely, I don't see any need to replace it for the time being, especially seeing how much Canon lenses have shot up in price in the last year or so.
