If Ukraine were part of NATO we would be at war with Russia a nuclear power
Exactly, Putin is getting the old soviet territory back before Ukraine joins NATO which would have made it extremely risky if not impossible. Ukraine has huge natural resources and is a massive agricultural producer. He wants that as much as a return to the old Russian led empire from the cold war pre-Gorbachev.

To be fair the EU have their eyes on the Ukraine also ( and weirdly a lot of people in this country would complain if tens of thousands came here to work under the EU umbrella )

But of course it should be up to the Ukraine population to decide - is the Ukraine a proper democracy?

Of course in a democracy things are not always clear - take Brexit for example and it is reported that many in the Ukraine sympathize with Russia and have family in Russia and vice versa.

However countries can't just be allowed to bully neighbours and invasion is unheard-of post WW2 - Argentina tried it.

In answer to your comment about Scottish reaction C24.Our gallant S N P leadership would order both gliders to be launched with ball bearings loaded in the peashooters(if they could find any.).As a submarine deterent the fleet of airbeds would be deployed using the new type of breeze block being trialed.Command and control would be via mobile phone, assuming the Captain on the first westbound jet out of Edinburgh would allow it.Think I have dropped the pin.

We are supposed to be a Democracy Slogan yet thousands more people voted against the SNP than for it and they still got in.Democracy means different things to different people?

Sorry to distract from the conversation, but I don't suppose anyone knows if there's any way to track the latest developments on a map? I know there was something similar when ISIS were invading Afghanistan, where you could see the 'borders' live...

Post WW2 - Hungary invaded in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Yes of course but I thought Hungary 1956 was an uprising against the already Soviet controlled government. And the Soviet basically came along with more troops and stamped it out - brutally

At that time the USSR power base ironically was in the Ukraine region who have always been viewed as elitist within the then Soviet Union , bit like the north / south divide in the UK?

great idea using Breeze blocks topower the air beds

Well Fizz, the best that I can think of is to volunteer for #51Sqdn

I guess that shielding at home and wearing a face mask won't be effective in this situation.

The reaction of the "west" is as expected but i wonder how countrys operating a mix of Russian and western hardware like Egypt/Indonesia/India/Etc will react.

Putin can go **** ******* and the sooner he shuffles off this mortal coil the better. One man has challenged the world in a heart beat a modern Hitler in the true sense of the word. It’s time to stop buying/trading anything Russian, visiting the country etc and let’s see if people below him appreciate it when their lives are changed.

Surely some things are more important than spotters seeing some aircraft and more concerning what is happening to the free people of Ukraine.

Does anyone know where the Antonov An-225 Mriya is at the moment? Just wondering if Antonov Airlines flew all their really big transports out before this kicked off? Their production facility is at Kyiv. I know they're not military, but these heavies are always pretty interesting regardless.

Oh for feck sake I know that - you are sooooo patronising

I suppose if I mentioned increase oil prices you will say there are more important things than driving your car !

This a military aviation site for enthusiasts

People come out with these platitudes while comfortably sitting in their safe European homes - I find it pretty insulting.

I hope you are not the Rob C at Mildenhall whom I get on well with and quite admire - that would be a shame to fall out over this. I would quite happily live in a world where military aviation was not required and we could all live in peace and spot at Heathrow every Saturday :)

There was initial reports that the An-225 had been destroyed, but it seems that it is still intact!

Antonov Pilot Dmytro Antonov confirms that the An-225 is intact

Antonov pilot Dmytro Antonov appears to have confirmed that the An-225 remains intact at its home airport outside of Kyiv.

Unfortunately she is at Gostomel. Why on earth anyone thought it was a good idea to keep one of the most valuable aircraft on the planet in a potential war zone is beyond me..
