C-130s trip to the beach

Post by gnirtS » Fri Apr 16, 2021 1:27 am

(Overly) long sequence from the RAF C-130s (ZH889) / Ascot 126 practicing daylight tactical landings at Cefn Sidan (Pembrey) this week.
Far better photographically than the Atlas - more landings, more circuits, faster turnaround. No RTK set on a cart etc.

Flat light for most of the day but a short bit of later afternoon sun appeared towards the end. A fun 3 hours (other than the 7 mile walk in total from then back to the car).

NOTAM was for night landings the following day so i guess practice for that.

Very nice crisp set there.

Well worth the walk and the wait I'd say.

Thats what i liked. None of the trying to shoot through 300m of haze or restricted views at an airshow etc. Can move up and down the "runway" at will and cross it if you ask nicely when convenient.

Close enough that the sand and wind blast is capable of blowing tripods over (trust me on that).

The ground support were happy to stand just up from the high tide line.

One sour note is one guy there did keep creeping forward every single time despite being asked and triggered one go-around as the aircraft deemed him too close so sadly some people will still push their luck.

Same a/c was there last night at 3am doing night landings.

Now, these are really good! Super detail with imaginative & varied shooting angles. They make for some great shots of the C-130 doing what it does best. :thumb:

If anyone is interested 2 quick video clips:-

First touch and go:
https://youtu.be/hSoRmiKQtQw

Then having realised i needed to stand further back without a wide lens, a landing:-

https://youtu.be/EvMuCV1L8XM

Can hear and see the wind and sandblasting after its gone past.

Definitely more scope for photos than an airshow just due to how close you can get and freedom to move around to any side or angle you want.
