Finningley At Home '79
Finningley At Home '79
Further to my last post I've located a set of slides taken 41 yrs ago this week @ the 1979 Finningley show. Even back then I knew a rarity when I saw it and so covered the Air National Guard A-7 from every angle. I believe it was from a Coronet deployment to Waddington. It was not a good day for photographing the flying so I limited my efforts to the Reds, who opened the show before departing for Leuchars. This was one of their last displays with the Gnat as they converted to the Hawk for the following season - a nice shiny new example of which was on static display.

I was there on that day too.
A RAF Veteran of all of 2yrs!
Sadly, I had more of an eye for the ladies at the time than I did for aircraft, although I got a good view of both as I recall...
What a great treat to view some of these frames again.

If memory serves the a/c on view were more interesting - but then again I was no longer a testoterone fuelled young buck!reheat module wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 7:24 amI was there on that day too.

The A7 deployment was either Waddo or Wittering I saw them transit over Nottingham behind the tanker,KC10?
A favourite A/C of mine over the years, my life trip round Pima AM at Tucson was chaperoned by a former
SLUF driver from the Vietnam era. Great place to visit if you ever get the chance

A further note from another who was there, the printed programme had not had time to include the display by the RNLAF F-104, one of the best I've ever seen. The nose light was often all you could see streaming toward with sooty trail behind. If I may venture a tiny critique, there was no Leuchars that year, on Bolthole due to runway resurfacing.

Y're right about the RNLAF F-104 not appearing on the programme. In fact it arrived just before the start of the display. There is a pic if it on my previous post. Must have changed films which is why it does nt feature here. As the Reds were nt Leuchars bound as I assumed, thinking back I now seem to recall the commentator saying that they were going to Germany to appear at one of the station open days.Leuchars Fan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 11:59 amA further note from another who was there, the printed programme had not had time to include the display by the RNLAF F-104, one of the best I've ever seen. Re: Finningley At Home '79
Indeed Sir, Leuchars dipped out in 1980 as well even though the Squadrons had returned, the reason I understand was a mix of concerns about the increased tempo of exercises during September and the construction of the HAS complex on the North side of the runway which was used heavily for car parking. They clearly resolved the situation as it was back in 1981.F3 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 3:34 pmY're right about the RNLAF F-104 not appearing on the programme.
