That makes a lot of sense. I never could figure out why they kept flying them after retirement from the front line. Using them as stealthy targets makes a lot of sense. No numbers have been published for the J20 and T50 but I bet they are in a similar ballpark as the F117.

They fly then every now and again to prove they meet their type 1000 storage, they have to be kept in a state where they can be returned to flight within a certain time frame, these occasional flights are to prove it.

Do they need to prove that? I thought Type 1000 just meant that the systems are maintained in a way that preserves their integrity in case they are recalled. Seems to me that if they were flying to meet Type 1000 they wouldn't fly over Los Angeles as one did recently for safety reasons.

Having stealthy adversaries in Red Flag is a very good use for these aircraft given that it's Stealth characteristics are still very relevant and low observable is not solely an American 'thing' any more.

The posts on the Dreamland Resort forum and airband radio recordings suggest the F-117s are doing much more than checking they're being kept airworthy. E.g. https://www.dreamlandresort.com/scanner ... 5.8000.mp3

Ultimately nobody knows for certain what they are doing and those that do know won’t be cleared to release that kind of info to anybody let alone to the readers of FC lol. It’s a bit like somebody saying that they are in the SAS. If they are telling you that they are, then they really aren’t.
It’s great that they are still flying at all but let’s hope that this thread doesn’t get filled up with people guessing as to what they are doing.
Regards
Mark

Well said. People say today is the information age where everyone knows what is going on everywhere.

It's worth remember it is the dis-information age to the same extent too, with many people who's Aunt's friends sons are top members of the US Military.
