68-10337 U-2 Query

Post by slogen51 » Sat Aug 08, 2020 4:23 pm

Hi

At Mildenhall this morning a spotter ( I am sorry but I don't know your name which is poor of me as we have chatted before) told me that 68-10337 was at the 1982 Mildenhall airshow and showed me a rather nice picture of it parked by the now demolished hangar.

I have looked at the Scramble show reports for Mildenhall 82 and it is not on the list?

I still need 10337 and have been thinking of schelpping over to Fairford so I was some what taken aback by hearing it was at a Mildenhall show so I shouldn't need it?

Ta
Mike

Just seen a picture of it at Mildenhall on 29/5/82

Time to dig out the logs and see what went wrong

Hi slogen, just checked my logs and I made 337 on that date, with a note ‘inside hangar’.

It was the last one to be detached to Det.4 - Mildenhall Jun'81 to Feb'83.

My log for the 1982 show is dated the 30th , I do not have 337 noted so maybe not outside on the Sunday ?. Thankfully i picked it up at Fairford last week

There is a picture on AB-PIC showing 68-10337 in exactly the same spot saying it was taken the next day 30th May.

Probably pushed out of the hangar late morning after some of you had wandered around the static display and gone to find the Bud & burgers stalls! :thumb:

This question has been raised before somewhere (can't remember where).

I seem to recall that the consensus of responses was that it was outside on Saturday 29th, but was back inside by the time the gates/fence re-opened on the Sunday.

Personally, I went on Sunday 30th and did not see it at all (not that I needed it then anyway) - and I was one of the first in.

On checking BAR, it states the U2 was on static Saturday only.

I can only refer you to the following picture and what the author has stated about when he took it.

Thanks everyone

We went in on 30/5/82 so didn't see the U-2 - Typical! Definitely need to see it at Fairford now!
( On the 30/5 2 WR A-10 and 2 LN swingers did a flypast - not read off)

Weirdly we started traveling on 29/5 , logging 2 JO phantoms at Alconbury and a Jag coded 'H' so I assume we must of camped at the base on the Saturday night?

Incidentally at Leavesden on the way up was a B200/ C-12 which we wrote down as 76-10649??

Cheers for the help

Mike,
I logged 76-0164 on 16.5.82 at Leavesden. Could that be your 'frame? You might have climbed up the bank and have been looking through trees?

Hi Mike,

Your two WR A-10s were 80-0181 and 80-0207. We didn't manage the two LN F-111Fs, nor the AR RF-4C.

On 29th, we found 3x JO RF-4Cs at Alconbury (64-1026, 66-0470 and 68-0578) plus 3x CR F-15Cs (79-0020, 79-0024 and 79-0027) and the 226OCU Jag.

Didn't go via Leavesden, so can't help on your Be200/C-12.
Cheers, Bob

Brilliant

That has to be the C-12 doesn't it? Especially as I still need it!

Thanks
( It's great going back through old logs - we logged 26 Canberras at Whyton and 2 B-52 at Marham on 30/5 presumably after leaving the show)

Pretty sure Tony ( Wolf 51) would have been doing the driving

Edit - at Alconbury we saw 41026 and 60470 BUT we didn't see 68-0578 and I still need that! ( Although I may have seen it in DM Which I log separately) what a roller coaster!
