Avro Arrow article (BBC Future)

Post by lardyboy999 » Fri Jun 26, 2020 11:35 am

See below.

As a bit of a space geek, I already knew about the Avro engineers going on to work for NASA when the Arrow project was cancelled, but it's still a very interesting article.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2020 ... obal-en-GB

I also recommend the book "Arrows to the Moon" by Chris Gainor.

Cheers.

Andy

So do you think RL-202 still exists Andy?

Would be great if it did but seems unlikely to me. The white delta seen landing in Kent with no markings was most likely a Vulcan at Manston?
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Nah. It would be sat at Cosford if it did, even if it was in bits.....

Do a Google search for either The Arrow miniseries or The Arrow docudrama.

I have a book on the Arrow which I bought from the museum at Rockcliffe Ottawa many years ago. The very last few pages are about how Boscombe Down tried to save a few of the jets for research (TSR-2 ?). Even includes the route they were going to use to ferry them back (a few stops).. so there was some real UK interest.. but given the number of stops for fuel somebody would have seen them (and I think it was a formal request for them rather than sneaking them out). The request came to nothing and the book says they were all scrapped. Although the museum does have the forward fuse of RL-206 on display which is the only significant bit left of any of them.

So are we saying that not a single complete Arrow still exists in any museum?

Rockcliffe have the forward fuse of RL-206 on display… other than that I think there is just a full size replica also… but no complete original Arrow…

I read else where that when the project was stopped, the RCAF wanted one for their museum but were no told NO. A science museum stated "This is the most advanced piece of technology ever produced in Canada, but they also were told no to having one. I then searched on line; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Canada_CF-105_Arrow .
On 20 February 1959, Prime Minister of Canada John Diefenbaker abruptly halted the development of the Arrow (and its Iroquois engines) before the scheduled project review to evaluate the program could be held. Canada tried to sell the Arrow to the US and Britain, but no agreements were concluded. Two months later, the assembly line, tooling, plans and existing airframes and engines were ordered to be destroyed.

I read that when we abandoned TSR2, the order went out to destroy the blue prints.
