RAF aircraft serials with names
RAF aircraft serials with names
Hi all have noticed recently an increase in the number of RAF aircraft that have designated names assigned to air frames so I thought I might try making a list of them.
P8:
ZP801 "Pride Of Moray"
ZP802 "City Of Elgin"
A-400M:
ZM400 "City Of Bristol"
E3-D
ZH101 - "Doc"
ZH103 - "Happy"
ZH106 - "Grumpy"
1435flt (Typhoons):
"Faith"
"Hope"
"Charity"
"Desperation"
6Sqn Typhoon

Re: RAF aircraft serials with names

E-3D Sentry fleet (names carried inside the crew door on the port side) :-
ZH101 - Doc
ZH102 - Dopey
ZH103 - Happy
ZH104 - Sleepy
ZH105 - Sneezy
ZH106 - Grumpy
ZH107 - Bashful
Only 3 (I think) are still in service though ('101. '103 & '106).

Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
They all had a painting of the said Dwarf within the airframe at the back.
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
Have any of the RAF's P8 flown on any training missions yet?
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
Most of the VC10 fleet were named after people who were awarded the VC… and the Shackleton AEWs after characters from the Magic Roundabout.. list could be big as already said...
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
Yes the P-8s have been flying. and declared IOC Mentioned under Kinloss or the Heads Up section

Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
Aircraft down in the Falkland Islands used to have names, not sure if they still do.
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
With the reduced size of the RAF each transport / patrol aircraft could be dedicated to a squadron. Nice way to keep squadron number plates and history alive.
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
The Phantoms were Faith, Hope, Charity - after the Gladiators in Malta - with the addition of Desperation. They shared the 1435 number plate.romeo bravo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 5:37 pmAircraft down in the Falkland Islands used to have names, not sure if they still do.
McRoberts Reply - a famous Stirling - and a name which moved, eventually, on to a/some (?) Tornado(s). Was that 15 sqd.?
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
Yeahh it was 15 Sqn that had the McRoberts Reply, remember having one of there Tornado McRoberts at Marham not long after 15 was disbanded
Re: RAF aircraft serials with names
The typhoons also share the same names.

A 6 Sqn Typhoon was a sort of replacement for the 15 Sqn McRoberts Reply.
