I'd of bet a large amount of cash that you'd join in Tim and with a moan! Sorry mate, only ribbing ya! :P

1982-1986 at 1936 sqn at RAF Newton. Got to Staff Cadet as a cadet. Also in the aircraft recognition team which won the wing and regional competitions represented the region at the national final at Hendon where I was 8th in the individual competition. Got my gliding scholarship at RAF Syerston in 1986 flying the Slingsby Venture. Also flew in chipmunk at Newton, Sedbergh at Scampton, Dominie at Finningley and an AAC Scout at Hereford. Left due to work commitments after failing to get in the RAF as aircrew. Local aviation artist and author of books about Newton and Syerston, Tim O'Brien, started around the same time as me.

1980 - 1982 195 Squadron Grimsby.
Had trips to Finningley, Lindholme, Newton, Binbrook, Donna Nook and Cranwell.
Two camps - Swinderby Survival Exercises 1981 (have the photo somewhere) and Summer Camp at Waddington 1981.
Chipmunk flights in WZ856 (twice) at Newton and WG469 at Waddington. (Can remember walking out to the Chippie
seeing a Vulcan doing circuits at Waddo - those were the days ;) )
Then did my Gliding course at Lindholme in Sedbergh's and MKIII's according to my book.
Also one of the Squadrons duties was to attend the opening of the Humber Bridge.
We had to salute the Queen as she walked past us - never been so frightened as she walked past!!!

Happy Days

Cheers Paul.

That reminds me of the time when ITV filmed a programme about a cadet at Newton, one of these programmes about out of school pursuits. A lot of the scenes showed him having a flight in a Chippy.

As this cadet was also interested in modelling they got a couple of cadets from each of the local squadron to come along and sat us round a table building our kits. I remember sitting opposite Tim O'Brien. When the show was finally aired we were on screen for about 5 seconds!

1969-1973 as a member of George Heriot's (Edinburgh) RAF section of the CCF (Combined Cadet Force),does this count ?
If so,spent many hours flying Chipmunks from Turnhouse with 12 AEF,shooting each other with .303 blanks at the Dreghorn range and becoming the .22 rifle Champion at the school's rifle range.

Happy days ! (apart from the blanco on the gaiters and belt and the hot-spoon treatment on the toe-caps of new boots etc. !)

Hurrah, another non-ATC Air Cadet! I always knew you were a superior sort of fellow Mike ;)

I was a member of the RAF Section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe 1973-78 finishing up with the rank of Cadet Under Officer which was a rank dating from the old OTC days in between Cadet Warrant Officer and Pilot Officer.

Loved every minute of it - attended camps at Shawbury, Lossiemouth, Cranwell, Marham & Linton on Ouse, plus overseas visits to Wildenrath, Laarbruch, CFB Baden Söllingen, USAF Ramstein and US Army Bad Tölz.

I was a staff cadet on 6 AEF at Abingdon 1976-78. My time in the CCF was also the catalyst for my life-long interest in full-bore rifle shooting.

Not "superior" at all HS,just glad to pass my memories on to other members.
My years in the CCF did me a lot of good,it taught me lots of things and I'm still reaping the benefits now.
I shan't tell you where we went for Summer camps,I could, but might have to kill you.

CCF..? Oh yes I remember, they were the ones with long hair! I was a member of 1263 Rochdale Sqn. from 1982 - 1988. Great times and great memories. It's a shame that the RAF wasn't as much fun! Does anyone remember how tight those parachutes were when walking towards the Chipmunk? Surprised I've fathered three kids since then! :D

CI and Adult WO with 2400 Sqn (Lawside Academy) Dundee 1989-1992.......even spent a week with the Rock Apes at GDS St. Athan to become an authorised range officer.

Still in as Wing Staff Officer in Beds & Cambs Wing, did my time on 51 (Orton) Sqn in Peterborough as their boss for over 10 years. Been in since 1994, never a cadet.

Prior to this I always cursed the ATC, they always seem to move in front of aircraft just as I was about to take a photo. Just wish we had the opportunities these days, Mildenhall Air Fetes or Alconbury!!!

Unfortunately you are correct - this was largely because around 70% of cadets in most units were there solely because it was the least objectionable (to them) option for that particular afternoon. Certainly in our unit the keen ones had regulation hair length.

I've got other camp photos somewhere, I'll have to try to find them.

Ah yes happy days. Was even worse when you're and adult WO and have Staff Cadets doing the tightening.

Thanks 12 AEF, I still get tears in my eye to this day. ;)
