New MIG 21 for the UK

Post by brumbee » Tue Jan 28, 2020 8:10 pm

On Sunday 26th January I popped into Cobham services on the M25 and I could not help but see a MIG 21 on a low loader parked in the HGV area . Closer inspection revealed the serial 1811 so I am presuming it is the MIG21M formally at Dabrowa Gornicza . The lorry had polish plates so the question is where was it off to ?

I did notice there were 2 1811's - but N21PF has a distinctive paint job whereas the 1811 I saw was still in it's basic silver finish and was very much like the last pictures I have seen from when it was preserved in Poland.

If this is c/n 967811 does that mean it's reappeared for the first time since 1994?!

Going back to the sighting at the motorway services the aircraft was loaded with the tail planes separate and placed either side next to the cockpit area so I had to stick my head around this to see the serial so the fact I read it as 1811 and not 7811 does add up. I didn't want to poke around too much to draw attention to myself as the driver was probably asleep in his cab. The MIG was also engineless , nice addition to the UK preservation scene though .

the following from Phil A,

the faded serial could easily be mistaken for 1811 under the conditions described by OP
