A14 traffic

Post by Pune » Wed Jan 22, 2020 5:25 pm

Hi Folks,
We have to travel on A14 from the west if we visit RAF Mildenhall/Lakenheath, how is the traffic on the A14 now, any improvement of late?
Thanks in advance.

Judging by the last time I used it might be quicker to head west and go the long way round

I had the misfortune of using it last Monday to get to Stansted. The new section is great...until you get near Cambridge services. It then came to a complete standstill as the new and old roads merge. Maybe when finished it will be a lot better, but until then, if I ever go to Mildenhall on a week day I either go long before the traffic builds up, or head across the A1123 from Huntingdon.

I’m with EF-111, leave the A1 south at Sawtry and take the scenic route A1123. I gave up on the A14 several years ago. One stretch “overland” of the A1123 has a derestricted 60mph max speed limit and would be considered flat by people from Nepal.
The least busy time is between 0200 & 0315 hrs on Sundays.

One thing to note if travelling Westbound through the Cambridge roadworks......

Since the opening of the new access to the M11/A14 Northbound, if you want to continue West on the A428 (for Bedford, etc) you now need to be in the inside lane and branch off. The outside lane now takes you up over the new flyover and onto the M11/A14 North. This is after the M11 Southbound turn-off (which is earlier than it used to be).

The turn-off for the A428 is not that well signed and I nearly missed it last Friday (17/01/2020).
Cheers, Bob
