Might be an old wives tale, but ISTR at one Mildenhall show the SR had some sort of 'flame out' during a low speed flyby. The pilot surged the other engine up to 11 which produced huge assymetric yaw. This was corrected by a bootfull of rudder, but the sudden left/right/straght ahead motion caused the WSO/backseater to whack their head on both sides of the canopy. There was a large 'fireball' out the back of one or other engine as the burners ignited.

Pretty sure I've seen photos of the 'flameout' somewhere in the past - is this the same event?

Re. the big unstarts (Duncan Cubit had pictures of it published) I spoke to some Pratt and Whitney guys in the Jude's Ferry later that day (Saturday) or Sunday- "was it supposed to do that?" NO was the categorical reply!

It was actually, apparently all the TEB shooting out the back of the engines that caused the fireballs according to Rich Graham's book, Mike Smith and Doug Soifer were the crew - I believe that may have been 1986.

That can be said for countries of any size.

The story is not true according to Col. Rich Graham (USAF Retired) who researched the speech and wrote his findings in his book 'Flying the SR-71'.

He contacted the chief archivist at the LBJ Library and was sent copy of the original speech text that President Lyndon Johnson used and his speech said SR-71, however the stenographer that transcribed the speech for waiting reporters wrote RS-71. And so that is the real story behind the myth that the President misspoke.
