Thanks BJ for the MOD news regarding various improvements here for Lossie. Much of the information has already been known locally. Interestingly mention is made of a new Control Tower with many thinking that this had been shelved.Certainly this year the level of aircraft activity is much less due to ongoing work.
We shall have to be patient for a couple of years until fully finished :(

The Control Tower saga has been ongoing since the mid to late 90's when plans were to move it to the area between the main runway and Southern taxiway in front of were the II(AC)Sqn Ops building is now.

Does it take 2 years to resurface a runway?

I believe it's a lot more than just resurfacing. Taxiway work and strengthening works.

Would take about 5-6 months just to re surface the main runway. However the work involved this time round is more substantial and includes replacing the runway sub structure along with taxiway strengthening/widening and hardstanding work. They’ll probably take this opportunity to re wire the lighting circuits as well. Bare in mind also that progress will be slower between November and March due to cold weather and dark nights.

Perhaps tomdotcom would care to research the time it took to re-surface Waddingtons runway, and remove (most) of the hump. And also take into account the fun surprises they found under it !

Where will the Typhoons go to whilst the work is carried out?

Well it's a fact that rumours of the hump removal have been doing the rounds for some time, as has the many published details of a new control tower and the strengthening/widening of the northern taxyway and of course the other rumour that the taxyway is staying as it is and all the large aircraft have to backtrack. Seemingly out of the blue came the news of the Boeing facility to be built and look how that's progressed: Click for link. Oh, and did you hear the one about the Reds moving to Lossie

Note that I started the post with "... it's a fact that rumours...

They're not coming now Al. They wanted the white squares on the caravan painted red, and were told NO!

So that's spring 2020 for the runway works at Lossie with the P-8's coming to Kinloss first with all the infrastructure complete and ground services at Lossie with busses to Kinloss. Boy the MOD do like to do things the hard (expensive) way?

After a bit of bartering it's been agreed that the runway will be painted red, the taxiways white and the red squares on the caravan white and the white squares red! Lossiemouth is to be renamed RAF Red City - Ruby of the North.

Interesting that Spring 2020 is being discussed on here as the start date for the runway works, when in the briefing given by the contractors in late October they stated a January 2020 start date.

NOTAM for Kinloss has airfield there closed till Monday 16 December 0900. Had thought that work would have been starting soon at Lossie but looks like as it's Spring 2020.

Charlie and Delta hard on the North side of the 2.3. Runway and the Eastern end of the Northern taxi way are fully cordoned off with red and white crash barriers. The first of the heavy plant has just been dropped off by low loader onto Delta. The remainder of the Northern taxi way down to Q is still open for QRA.
