Nine with a nautical nuance
Nine with a nautical nuance
Hi Peeps
Still delving as and when I can
These are from only 2 shows, both in 1988: Mildenhall Air Fete and Norwich Airport
I think
As I recall, the beast was only on the circuit briefly, as it cost an arm and a leg to run, and these are the only 2 occasions I got to see it flying

Nice bit of nostalgia. Fairey Gannet was an iconic aircraft and I do recall this one briefly in the airshow circuit, but what happened to it?

Cracking shots PB. Remember Norwich '88 for this one alone! We must have been near the same spot as I have similar photos but not as good.

Fantastic pics Paddy - I've always loved the Gannet 3, especially in 849 B Flight colours. Superb.
I have heard a rumour that the new owners are hoping to restore XL502 to ground running condition - fingers crossed.
XL500 restoration & RTF continues I understand, but they've been stuck with getting the props restored for many years now... would love to see this back on the (now very limited) airshow circuit... fingers and toes crossed for this!

Number 3 is sublime, I believe it was operating out of Carlisle at that time...well seen and caught Paddy.

Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
I recalled seeing Gannets in and out of HMS Daedalus / RNAS Lee on Solent every now and again. They had a character all of their own! Thanks so much for posting.
Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Brilliant archive shots Paddy
849 Sqdn. frequently had detachments into Binbrook and worked up and down the Humber Estuary - they just sounded brilliant !
Never managed any decent shots of them so these are just great mate
thanks for posting

Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Great stuff Paddy, don't remember ever seeing one of those fly
Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Hats off to you Patrick. That's the best sequence of Gannet pics I've ever seen. #3 is an absolute corker. You can visit her @ Yorkshire Air Museum if ever you want to be re-acquainted.

Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Wonderful shots, paddyboy; they take me back to the 1970s when I watched 849 Sqn's Gannets circuit-bashing at Lossiemouth. A couple of them were still in natural metal and Dayglo Red or Orange, one was in all-over dark grey (think it was a COD bird), but the AEWs wore those gorgeous black and yellow/gold squadron markings - and all of them converted power into noise. Sadly, all I had back then was a Kodak Instamatic, so no photos, which is one reason why your shots are fantastic and really appreciated. I hope one of the survivors gets back in the air or at least ground-running; I would love to hear that sound again before I pop my clogs!

Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Really impressive to see action shots from airshows before the days of digital made it a bit easier as you now of course you can view as you shoot.
Re: Nine with a nautical nuance
Wow, they are some seriously good shots !!
What a fantastic looking aircraft.
Thanks PB, really enjoyed seeing them.

Well Paddy
As young as I am I haven’t seen a Gannet in flight as I’m sure you’ll understand Of course If I did I hope I’d got some shots like this. Sadly I’ve only got the ground shots from Elvinton, on account of being that so much younger
Great stuff buddy keep digging.

Nice set Paddy. I'll have to check my archives. Did the '88 AIr Fete but don't recall bagging the Gannet.
