Lakenheath base tour 2nd of August

Post by hernaman86 » Mon Jul 22, 2019 11:24 am

Hi All

Not sure why but my previous topic has been locked, Anyway I have some more spaces should anyone else wish to come on the 2nd of august, I know its short notice but the Air Force only just got back to me as they had a management change in their department and we got missed.

Its £20 per person to cover my cost for the coach I have hired, we are doing a pick up from the public viewing area at the base (plenty of room for parking and its free) and also the local train station which is Brandon.

Send me a text 07850951060 or email michaelhernaman@googlemail.com if you want to come, I will need full names, Passport/Driving license number, Date of birth, Emergency contact and number.

I must know by midday tomorrow as I will be sending all the details to the Air Force and that will be it.

Below is some more information I have received

“Good afternoon Mr. Hernaman,

Firstly, thank you for being so gracious. Per our telephone conversation today, please complete and return the attached documents no later than COB Tuesday 23 July.

Our Office will not be able provide an itinerary at this time due to the many working pieces involved in conducting the tour on an operational base, however, we would like to inquire of any special considerations ( wheel chairs, walkers etc), that must be kept in mind for coordination of the itinerary. We will try our best to accommodate your requests on the tour request forms submitted.

We ask that you arrive in a coach at 11:00am at gate 8 on the day of the tour with your ID's handy (corresponding to the IDs on the escortee document). Our community engagement team (cc’d) will meet you there and help get you through security.

After in-processing, our team will accompany your group on the coach for the guided tour. The tours are slightly fast paced, and unfortunately we do not have a lunch scheduled in, so I recommend that visitors bring a lunch with them and snack in-between stops. Sensible shoes are also recommended as there will be a bit of walking. The tour should be finished between 3 - 3:30 pm.

Though there will be areas photography is prohibited , photographs are generally encouraged so please bring your cameras and enthusiasm. We are excited to have you and are looking forward to hosting the Eagles!!

If you have any further questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out any member of the community engagement team above or call 0163852 2151.

Very respectfully,

SHANICE R. WILLIAMS-JONES, A1C, USAF
Photojournalist, Media Operations
48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
RAF Lakenheath, England”

Have had quite a few people saying they dont know where the Lakenheath Public viewing is, well on google earth, paste in "A1065, Brandon IP27 0SJ" and you should find it, its on the eastern end of the runway, just off wangford road. plenty of room to park.

Is this really a suitable place to suggest people park and abandon their cars for the best part of the day. It is a viewing area not a public car park.

One other thing I would point out; I have been parked viewing there in the past when an emergency has occurred with an aircraft. Everyone was requested to vacate the area and remove their cars asap as a precautionary measure; it will not be very popular if a load of cars do not move creating a security risk.

Its a public view area away from the base along a public road! as long as no one is stupid enough to park in front of the crash gate it will be fine! you can park on the road leading up to the area, there is a grass verge on the side leading up to the viewing area, people park cars there all the time, there would still be plenty of room should the emergency services need to get past, so i don't see what the issue is? does anyone else think its an issue? any alternate ideas?does anyone know the area well and know of a better parking solution,,,,obviously try and bring as less vehicles as possible, i was going to start the whats app group tomorrow and then people who join it can maybe talk about sharing a lift up, i have a guy who is asking me if anyone is driving up from north London and is willing to share a lift.

As for the safety of the cars, well what can i do about that?

Okay guys

That's all sent off now to the USAF, so those who know they are going should be well aware now haha, they will get back to me tomorrow and then like they said they will provide us with an itinerary

They did say last week when i spent ages on the phone that they will make sure we are looked after due to their mistake in not providing me all the final paper work sooner, So when i talk to them the next, i'm going to ask that we get as close to the jets as possible, maybe if we can see the heritage jets up close, i have seen on previous tours that they have had a F15 in a hangar which you can sit in, also a tour of the armory, lets see what they come back with.

The coach is going to be at BRANDON train station at 10:30am for those traveling by train, we will then pick everyone else up at the viewing area and leave there at 10:50am to arrive at the base for 11:00am

IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE, that you bring the photo identification you provided me, also for those which gave me driving licences,,check they are in date(please let me know if this is now the case!)personally i think everyone should bring as driving licence and a passport as back up (if they have one), just in case as they are not going to mess about at the gate.

When they confirm tomorrow all is go, i will get in contact with you how to pay me the £20 per person, pay pal will be the easiest or i can send my bank details.

Our group for the day is called the Eagles, there is 35 of us going, so will be great to meet you all.

My number is 07850951060, can text/call me whenever you want if you have some questions.

Cheers Michael

The viewing area is a safe place to leave your cars in the car park. Some parts of the verge have restrictions. Regular spotters always use the car park no complaints. The only complaints is people not using the litter bins. :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: I have never heard of the Usaf asking people to move cars.

Other base tours have always started from the viewing area.

I've only just found this new thread. I hadn't realised that the old one had been locked!

Did a whatsapp group get started?

If not, I plan to travel clockwise round the M25 from jct 11, and may be able to car share, if times suit. I shall probably be leaving quite early, to avoid the worst of the traffic, but shall want to head home a bit sharpish after the tour. Send me a PM if interested.

The Lakenheath viewing area is on this map... https://www.google.com/maps/place/RAF+L ... d0.5797514
