Friends and families day

Post by Sonicboom » Sun Jun 09, 2019 5:02 pm

Hi all. I am from Northern Ireland and will be holidaying at Aviemore from 29th June to 13th July. We always spend a day spotting at Lossie and I notice that Families Day is Thursday 4th July. Can anyone tell me if it is a good or bad idea to head up on this date, (I'm thinking that there will be very little flying although the Reds are displaying I think) will the place be crowded around the base? Are there extra restrictions on stopping? I usually spot from the layby near the windsock beside the pig farm, good views of taxiing for runway 05. Would I be better going up the day before?
Any advice from locals or regular spotters would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Phil.

Hi Sonic
Normally additional restriction on parking etc, No idea on flying schedule as not seen or heard anything, To be honest right now there is so little flying your not missing much we get a few Typhoons up but it very quiet but think a lot is to do with the works that are taking place hope this helps

With No 1 Sqn away in Cyprus, No 2 Sqn on post Cyprus leave, you are only going to see 6 Sqn & 9 Sqn active. 6 Sqn usually put up two 4 ship waves per day and 9 Sqn two 2 ship waves. And that,s about your lot. Lots of Simulator time for the crews these days reduces the flying task. Hardly any visitors and no PDs at all.
Lossiemouth if they follow 2018 will request a local no parking zone to be put in place within the boundary of the flying display area. Although nothing has yet to appear on the fence where we usually go. It will probably be in place a couple of weeks before the event. But in 2018 the local police didn't really enforce the notice at all and the RAF Police have no jurisdiction outside the fence, so if you come up and its the RAF Police that try to move you on, just very politely decline their request.

The flying display will be in the time frame of 1300-1500 Local. RAF Falcons parachute display team, followed by solo Typhoon display, and then the Red Arrows.

The roads around the Southern and Western perimeters will be closed, as will the tracks around the RWY23 threshold. The road from Lossiemouth to Covesea will be open but with no stopping allowed. High tide will also be around then so not much beach to access either.

Whilst you might wish to ignore the RAF Police directions, the Display Director will stop flying if there are members of the public in any of the risk areas identified, such as Runway threshold areas. Anyone doing so and exercising their ‘rights’ won’t be too popular with the friends and families I expect

Why should there be any need to close roads at all? This only seems to be a phenomenon of recent years. Health and Safety gone mad again?

And all that palaver for a Typhoon and a handful of Hawks! Absolutely crazy and well over the top!

Don't know any timings.
NOTAM for Red Arrows display gave period between 1200 and 1400. For the parachute display 1145 to 1230. No time known for Typhoon display.
