Kinloss update

Post by shackleton0 » Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:55 pm

Walking along the Findhorn road today:-

The tall whins and rubbish at both sides of the road (along the centreline, and the approach lights) have been cut right back.

This is a good sign, and could be in anticipation of the deployment of Typhoons from Lossiemouth later in the summer.

Looking forward to some action here again......

From speaking to folk local to Lossie, I understand there will be a contingent of Typhoons at Kinloss over the runway resurfacing works at Lossie. The QRA is going to Leuchars I believe.

RAF P8’s also expected at Kinloss to begin with whilst the work to accommodate them at Lossiemouth is finished.

Not likely to be before February 2020.

1st P8 will go to Jacksonville later this year and then arrive in the UK in February 20.

First two P8s due Feb 2020, to operate for a few months until Lossie is ready.

Typhoons due around June 2020 for a few weeks while the runway intersection work at Lossie is completed.

Work ongoing at present on the runway at Kinloss.

This is the latest info (subject to change of course, as always)…... :thumb: :thumb:

I,ve written to the PRO at Kinloss about removal of Whin bushes along the track that leads to the access to the viewing hut and car parking area at the Findhorn end. This is what I received back from them.

"You will be pleased to know that we have just had it confirmed that MoD contractors will indeed clear this area. This will be carried out in light of the P8 arrivals which you correctly anticipate. This is all great news, and we except to see work commencing prior to Christmas. It is a huge job; Hamish Grigor also showed me this area earlier this year so I am aware of the scale. So, we’re very pleased that our contractors have partnered with the MoD to get this agreed. Much of the thanks for this lies with Balfour Beatty, RAF colleagues at Lossiemouth and our Quartermaster at Kinloss. A genuine team effort in recognition that this is a safety issue".

Checked out the access path to the observation hut this afternoon, and it has indeed been cleared (even did a bit myself at the weekend).

They have done a great job thus far.

Some of the whins at the front end may have to be cleared, but this is a brilliant effort, and great news for enthusiasts and photographers......

Just to update everyone, the Whins along the path leading to the Viewing Hut and the area where cars can be parked (the old Dispersal) have now all been cut back as promised by Kinloss Barracks. Please pass this on to anyone you know will want to come up to view at Kinloss again. Cars can be parked in the old location (NOT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD PLEASE) and the short walk to the hut only takes about 5 mins.

Hi guys just wanted to know, is it possible to see the Airfield at Kinloss from the Morayvia Area? I have heard you can see the Nimrod from Findhorn Road but wanted to know in case I’m in the Area while Lossie is closed for Runway Work and Typhoons are at Kinloss.

No.
Findhorn end gives best views and at the other end of the runway if they are landing from the Lossie side, the track at the John Deere dealers gets you quite close to the approach.
Mind you its a couple of years since I've been up so am open to correction by the locals.
I've been told that all operations are going to be from the north side.

Unless things have changed the fields by 25 (Lossie end) had pigs either side of the wee track. Probably best to avoid going down there if that's still the case come February/summer.

Interesting you say Northside Ops, I,ve been keeping an eye out on the runway works of late and haven't seen any up grading to any of the bays over on Northside. But there has been plenty of work (which seems ongoing) going on to Bays 1 to 9, those are the bays to the west side of the Tower on South side.

I'll bow to your observations as a first hand account beats a phone conversation.
Ironic then that they are going to be using the old Nimrod (and Shackelton) bays for the replacement for the aircraft which they cancelled because we didn't need a maritime type and that they are going to be using the base which was not needed either.
Don't start me on the QRA going to Leuchars (if that is still the case)
