Canberras - 85 Squadron Binbrook finale
Canberras - 85 Squadron Binbrook finale
Thought you might like to see these few 'historic' pics from 85 Sqd. finale at Binbrook before their move over to West Raynham.
These were taken in February 1972 by a British Aircraft Corpn. photographer, not sure if this was the actual day of the move.
I had been doing a modelling project on a Canberra (a rare model at the time) and had requested from the squadron an 'offcut' of
the dayglo tape which adorned the squadron's Canberras for high-viz. I graciously received back from Fg.Off. Mike Rondot an offcut
that would have easily sorted a real fullsize aircraft fin along with these memorable pics.
Hope you enjoy them too
T19 WJ610:T
T19 WH904:D
- presume the Whirlwind must have been doing some aerial pics - would be nice to see those!
WH904:D and WH724:C (this aircraft had been camouflaged for two years previous )
B2 pairs take-off
B2 WJ678:G (in the original silver finish)
Thanks for looking
Keith

Re: Canberras - 85 Squadron Binbrook finale
My first camp as an ATC Cadet was at West Raynham, 85 & 100 sqn B2, T4, and T17 (maybe T22 as well ?)Canberras, I got a flight in a 100Sqn B2. I've a ton of photos somewhere, must dig them out.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Thanks for the comments chaps. No I've never seen an RAF Canberra in USAF markings but we did once get a USAF B-57 into Binbrook - I'll look it out
I've got some other nice stuff to post too.

Think that's a contradiction in terms isn't it?! Unless you mean Canberras with RAF-style "greenhouse" canopies? There are certainly pictures of those around although I can't ever recall any evidence of such variants having visited the UK.
As far as I can recall, I think the only thing that ever happened like that was precisely the reverse, with RAF markings applied to USAF RB-45s at Sculthorpe. Can't think of anything similar having happened, unless...

3 Greens
Just taken two gents who served on 85 sqn at Binbrook a tour round yesterday at Binbrook and they will love them picstures as they lent me many interesting pieces of paper relating to 85 sqn at binbrook as well as a letter when 85 left binbrook.
Superb pictures. Will get them to have a look at them as they may be in the pictures

The 10TRW's 1TRS at Spangdahlem operated the RB-57A from 1954 to 1957 and these were sometimes reported visiting the UK. Likewise the 66TRW had the 30TRS so equipped at Sembach and one example from that squadron 21456 , was in the static at Wethersfield's AFD in June'57.Sheff wrote:Did you ever see RAF Canberras in US markings?

Sounds delicious! Don't suppose you have a photo? As I said, can't recall having ever seen a photo of the early-type B-57 in the UK. Would definitely be worth seeing!

They are lovely glimpses of nostalgia. The pairs take-off is certainly a rare image as Canberras rarely took-off in pairs. Hardly ever in fact. Surprising they even attempted it at Binbrook where the runway is only 150ft wide!
Love the shot of WH904 though - one of my favourite aircraft that I used to sit and watch for hours when it was with 7 squadron down at St.Mawgan. I've been looking for a photo of the aircraft wearing 7 Squadron markings for years now... never see any though grrr!

My favourite aircraft at my favourite base..... superb. I have a slide pic of an 85 squadron canberra(below). I pressume this would have been based at Binbrook.
Re: Canberras - 85 Squadron Binbrook finale
Great photos there, happy memories - any shots of the Meteors with 85Sq Keith? I last noted any on 23/10/69 when F8 WH291/T and T7 WL378/W were active.
