IX (B) squadron "aggressors"

Post by jackjak92 » Fri May 03, 2019 1:48 pm

Hello

Was just reading about the squadron being stood up and the article says that some aircraft will be painted in distinctive markings to identify as "adversaries".

Do you think the RAF will copy the USAF aggressors with similar paint schemes or not?

Jack

No, it's fact, they will be providing a QRA role too.

RAF Lossiemouth welcomed a new, fourth operational Typhoon squadron to augment its mission to protect UK and NATO airspace today.

The personnel and aircraft of IX(B) Squadron will be at the heart of the UK’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Force, ready to take off within minutes of an alert being triggered.

Some of the Squadron’s aircraft will be painted in distinctive markings to identify them as training ‘adversaries’, in their role as ‘aggressors’. In this role, they will provide a sterner training test to RAF and NATO fast-jet pilots, as they will play the role of opposing aircraft which match their speed and manoeuvrability while using the latest real-world dogfighting and air combat tactics against them.

QRA aircraft could be pooled from any of the squadrons but flown by IX crews. So they could easily have a few a/c “painted up”, time will tell.

Thanks to the others who responded understanding my point was about the colour scheme and not QRA.

Whooops, never good to read and answer on the go! My understanding is that these are earlier Tranche aircraft so specifically would be kept to the Air Defence role whereas the later aircraft in the other squadrons would do more multi role stuff. As to what that means in the aircraft used for QRA etc. I wouldn't know. Although the whole squadron wouldn't be QRA.

The Squadron’s primary role is QRA. This alleviates the pressure on other Typhoon squadrons who spend a lot of time on the road or on Ops. It also means that those posted to IX will spend less time away from home.

In addition IX’s secondary role will be to provide a 4thGen adversary capability.

Don't get too excited about any Aggressor paint-schemes. These are hard times for Defence Budgets, best you can hope for is a red tail-fin vinyl sticker with added lettering 100 Years "of Bad Guys" !
Gotta use-up that 'expensive' leftover stock from last year somehow?

This may be the reason why my upcoming model is to have an all black scheme & be known as the “Batphoon”.

Or you can "fill" IX with non-deployable reservists and not have to worry about manning another sqn entirely with regulars.

Sad to see so much cynicism. The OC of IX is Ex Jags and was on 3(F) when it stood up as the first Typhoon Squadron. Flying QRA, with all the responsibility that carries, and developing an effective adversarial capability demands experience so not sure where the dig at Reservists comes from. Please elaborate as the new Squadron will alleviate pressure on the Force as I mentioned previously.

No stickers this time, if you see the new Squadron patch you’ll get an idea of what’s in store. But as with the RAF100 decals, enthusiasts are not the target audience.

Thought it might be something to do with the Batman Squadron - The Batphoon.

More likely one of the Russian Su-35 colour schemes.
