The sport is approx 1 kilo (over 2 pounds) heavier than the contemporary - that's an extra bag of sugar to carry!

So after lots of research and consideration, I have taken the plunge on a Canon 7D mk ii with Sigma 150-660mm C lense to run along side my 70D with 70-200mm.. I have other lenses for close up so that not a problem..

Does anyone have a quick start guide for the 7D for aviation photography? I;m guess it will have a few more options than the 70d

Thank you very much mprl, that's a very useful thread :-)

Just need to get out and practice with the new lens and find its sweet spot etc... Hopefully have enough time before the show

Interesting... How would that work in airshow photography world? Would you change the ISO to ensure its hit F8 at all times ? Don't you have a 7D Mark?

I have a 7D mkII. I shall be sticking it on AV mode and leaving it on F8 initially, just hope its going to be a nice summer so the shutter speed stays nice and fast. May up the ISO or use Exposure Comp to get the shutter speed up where I want it.

The same with any photography - it's a balance between the settings. Lighting conditions change and you need to keep an eye on what your camera is doing. Sometimes that means a trade-off between ideal settings and practical ones. It isn't an exact science so the more you get to know your equipment's limitations - and your own - the better chance you stand of getting decent shots.

The main thing is to enjoy it :)

And I think that's a very good point about enjoying it! After all it is supposed to be fun, I guess sometimes you get carried away with the machine gun affect... i know I certainly do when at shows, and wouldn't it be nice to watch the airshow through your own eyes rather than the camera :-)

@Mark - From your experience of the Sigma, whats the difference modes the lenses supports and do you use IS for panning or at all?

Hello all,

I'm planning to go this year with a friend of mine. He is 21 and I am 17 (22 and 18 by then) years old.
We are from the Netherlands and have never been there before and we would like some tips and tricks.
We haven't quite looked at the sites and stuff, so we may have missed a lot of easy info and we will take a look tomorrow, but still the questions:

- We will go by plane and we think Bristol is the best option, any advise if there is maybe a better, closer airport to RIAT?
- We are most likely to stay in a hotel, I have found a good looking hotel, but we are still searching, any recommendations? We prefere not to spend that much, since we are both students ;) but we can definetely lose some money, that's not the biggest problem.
- I have read something about there being "different kinds of tickets" as in the location you are going to be staying with that ticket, any advise on which ticket to get? For your info, I currently have a Canon Eos 1200d body with the Canon 70-300mm IS USM II lens if that helps. I will also bring a 18-55mm for the static, in case that's needed.
- Any other tips and things to look out for?

Kind Regards, Zonan

Evening Zonan,

- Bristol is the closest airport, yes. Heathrow is a little further away, but may be easier for you.

- Yes, there's several different ticket packages avaliable. By far the best is FRIAT, which has unfortunately sold out but, there's still several other packages avaliable: https://www.airtattoo.com/airshow/visit ... ow-tickets

Hope you enjoy your trip! :thumb:

So, we've booked the flights and hotel.
I'm very hyped for my stay and hope to see some very nice aircraft.
I've heard two Harriers will visit :)

We're flying EasyJet from AMS to BRS on the 19th and back on the 21st, being at RIAT the full day on the 20th

We're staying in Swindon, does anyone know what's the best time for us to go towards Fairford, as it opens at 7:30?

You will go in on the Blue Route from Swindon ( I assume you are hiring a car) on the A419. I am also stopping in a hotel on the north side of Swindon and it takes about 20 minutes to get there.

I arrive in the Blue carpark at about 6 - and then go to sleep until 8. The queue, which starts to form at about 6, will have cleared by 8 and you should be able to just walk straight in.

Is a scanner allowed at the show?
I'm from the Netherlands and scanners are always allowed here, but I heard a lot of countries aren't happy with them.
We're going by plane, is that any problem, as in are scanners allowed to take with you?

Scanners perfectly fine in the UK, should have no issues. :thumb:

Yes, you are fine with a scanner as you would be one of the few people that don't have one at an airshow nowadays :-)

We don't have much to illegally listen too anymore in the UK, so the "heat" has been removed somewhat..

This is my first visit to the show, so hope you have a wonderful time!!

Thanks,
Chris
